I'm trying to upload ringtones to my V180 or my wife's T720. I have the USB
cables to connect them to the computer. I'm running Mac OS X 10.3.7, and I
also have Virtual PC version 6 or 7, and can use Windows 98, Windows 2000 or
Windows XP SP2. After reading some threads here, I tried installing MPT on
the Windows 2000 system, but it couldn't see the phone. Any assistance would
be greatly appreciated...and will win me big points with my wife. ;-)

    Thanks!!

It took 14 hrs of trial and error to get my Razr V3 working with
Motorola Mobile PhoneTools (MBT) under Virtual PC (VPC 7.0)
on my PowerBook G4 with OSX 10.3 with USB.

This may help with your Moto phone.

    Here's the major work items:
    1. Install MBT under VPC (Ver 3.11h) using CD.
Do this install WITHOUT the phone attached!!!!
Start MBT but don't expect it to work.
    2. Start MBT and use its LiveUpdate to get latest MPT (Ver 3.23).
2.1 Make sure you have IP networking working under VPC.
2.2 Start MBT skip the phone setup. it should complain but
then bring up the GUI of the phone.
    2.3 Select menu>Setup>LiveUpdate.
It will download about 25 MB and start updating.
It will restart the VPC about 4 times.
This is because the updates are contingent.
this step took about 45 min. on my machine.
If you can, try it on a real PC first so you know what
    to expect.

    3. In VPC manually install proper Motorola Modem Driver
    ( Motorola V and Timeport Modem )
    3.1 Goto Control Panel>Phone Modem Settings>Add select
the above modem and assign it to COM2.

    X. Restart VPC.

    4. Selection of Proper VPC settings.
4.1 Plug in Motophone with USB.
4.2 Start VPC (just OSX launcher not the actual VPC! )
    4.3 Goto Settings
    4.3.1 Goto USB item
    4.3.1.1 Enable USB
    4.3.1.2 Enable Apple USB
    4.3.1.3 Enable Moto V3
    4.3.2 Goto COM1 and disable
4.3.3 Goto COM2 and enable and use combo to select
    usbmodem3B11
    4.X Cloose settings.
    4.4 Start VPC proper.
4.5 After MS desktop comes up use Device Manager
and look at Modems to make sure Moto V is working.
    4.5 Start Mobile Phone tools.
    Select USB and continue.
If it doesn't work then skip setup. let GUI start
and goto Menu>Setup and manually install modem.

Let me know if it works or if I forgot anything important.
Feel free to pass this on.

    Good Luck.

    Whoops!!
The above was my first post, I made some goofs:

    1. MBT should be MPT.

    2. I used GreaterThan sign to seperate menu items they just got
    concatenated.
You'll figure them out, you're clever.

    3. When doing the VPC settings: your selection for the phone
    won't be Moto V3.

    4. Your selection of the modem for COM2 may be different.

    5. You may not need to update MPT to ver3.23 first.
I did it before I got stuff working so I included it as a setp.
The most important may be the VPC settings and the XP modem selection.

    6. MPT will try to use Motorola USB Modem. Don't use it!
    Use Motorola V Timeport modem!!

Thanks for all that, I use a PC at home and Macs at work so this will be
nice to have around. It really is a hassle to get some things to work on the
    Mac.

Re: Help, how to connect Motorola phone with Mac OS X or Virtual PC - Thanks and a new question

    Hey kburden,

Thanks for the info. I tried to follow your instructions, but run into a
few problems. I wasn't able to get mPT to do the Liveupdate, so I was stuck
with 3.11. The other issue I had was when I tried to install the Motorola
Modem Driver, I didn't find the Motorola V and Timeport Modem as an option to
select. Do I have to d/l that separate?

That being said, I was able to connect and use mPT with your instructions.
I did need to go through and select the phone manually from the Setup menu as
it wouldn't find it during the initial startup search. I was also able to
connect my new v600 phone using the same procedures.

Now I have a new question. mPT is working, but when I installed PST and
P2K, neither of them could see the v600. Any ideas or recommendations?

Thanks again for the instructions and help!!

    MP3 Ringtones ?

OK, by following these directions, I got my phone onto Phone mPT/VPC and I was able to offload pictures I took with the phone.

Now I want to upload MP3 files for custom ringtones, but every one I try it says is corrupted.

Over here ( http://www.mobiledia.com/forum/topic20321.html ) I saw a note that says "Make sure it is saved as a windows MP3 format."

Anyone know what a Windows format MP3 is and how to make one on a Mac ?
