Mobile Phone Tools with V600i

I just bought a V600i and love the phone, but so far have been
frustrated by every attempt to connect it to a computer, (using a USB
cable).

It came with Mobile Phone Tools, (I believe 3.11). I have tried
installing the software on a computer with XP-SP2, one with XP-SP1 and
one with Win2000. I have also tried both version 3.19 and 3.19e, so
don't recommend an update. No matter what I do it seems that the
phone isn't recognized. I even downloaded and tried Mobiledit with no
luck.

The problem seems to be with the communication to the Motorola USB
Modem, (which I have removed and reinstalled about 100 times). If I
go under system manager and test the modem, I get a message that it
can't communicate on all three computers. The error messages inside
Mobile Phone Tools are a little vaguer. If you try to connect the
phone when you start it just keeps searching over and over. If you do
it through the setup menu, add mobile, it tells you that the com port
is either locked by other software or there is no phone. The USB
Modem is using Com3 which is what I assume it should use.

The drivers for the Motorola USB Modem are dated April 2004 and I am
wondering if they are the problem. The reason is that the very first
time I installed the phone on the first computer it did recognize it
before I did a live update, but some features weren't working. I have
tried to do a complete uninstall and reinstall just version 3.11 to
get it partially working with no luck. The software obviously leaves
settings, etc. behind no matter how thorough an uninstall you try to
do.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The way it is now, I
might as well have bought a phone for half the price.

Not familiar with the v600i (do you mean v600, v60i or is there an "i"
variant of the v600 now?). Did you plug the phne into the PC before
installing MPT? If so, you need to delete the phone from wherever it
appears in Device Manager (COM Ports, Modems, USB Devices), reinstall
the software, and lastly, plug in the phone. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the quick response.

The V600i is basically the newest version of the V620. It mainly
improves on the camera.

I know on the first computer I did make the mistake of pluggin the
phone in first, but thought I was careful on the other two not to. I
have deleted the Motorola USB modem from device manager and done it
the right way, but will do a more thorough search remove the software
and try again.

I will let you know how it went in a couple hours.

I have a V620 and T720 (and I just sold a V600 on eBay), all of which work
perfectly with MPT.
I don't think it works (well) with XP-SP2. Stick to SP1.
I'm pretty sure the problem is with the installation of the drivers. Do NOT
allow Windows to find the drivers for you. Point to them by browsing to the
MPT folder.

Thanks for the addition advice Steve. I'm beginning to wish I had
stuck with a 620 instead of the 600i now especially since it was about
$70 cheaper!

I have completely removed everything and tried again, (on the Win 2000
machine) with no luck. I carefully removed everything from the
registry this time, so it was a totally clean install. I'm beginning
to wonder if the V600i is just too new and I am out of luck for now.
Just because Motorola bundles the software with it means nothing since
the software is really third party software.

Strange thing is when I look on at the modem in System Devices it
shows that it is a V600i and everything so it IS recognizing the
phone, but then when I go to Diagnostics and do a Query Modem it
fails. The driver version is 2.0.0.4 if that helps anyone. On one of
the other computers I even downloaded an inf file to manually install
the drivers which was what you have to do to use Mobiledit instead of
Mobile Phone Tools.

This is really embarrassing since I'm an engineer and work with
computers all day and normally don't have any trouble with this kind
of thing and am telling other people what to do. I can't believe it
can be this difficult that I have failed to get the phone to interface
with three very different computers, even when carefully following the
instructions. I would really like to know if anyone has succeeded
with a V600i (or even owns one for that matter) and if so what they
did.

OK. I verified that the problem isn't some basic thing I am doing
wrong. I plugged in my old V66 and an old timeport which I never
bought the cable for and they worked fine, (still had problems with
the application crashing if I try to copy to outlook, but one step at
a time).

This makes me feel that maybe that the V600i is just too new. It is
also a Hong Kong model that I got on the Internet, (Included the cable
and software that way), but that shouldn't matter. The phone is so
new that the manual says V600i on the front, but inside it calls it a
V620. Now I know the phones are almost identical except that the
V600i has the 4x digital zoom on the camera and can also take video as
well as still pictures. I don't know why Motorola decided to call it
a V600i instead of V620i. Version 3.19 of Mobile Phone Tools does
know the model, but who knows if they have really tested it.

So are there ANY V600i users out there.

I'm pretty sure the V600i (Asia) and the V620 (Europe) are identical. My
V620 has mpeg4 video and a zoom camera (I'm not 100% sure it's 4x). I use
MPT 3.19 with my V620 and it works just fine. Having said that, I did have
some trouble setting it up the very first time. I found that the problem
was in the way the drivers (I believe there are 4 of them) are loaded. I
just don't remember the exact steps I took. I do recall that you can not
allow Windows to automatically install them for you. You can allow XP to
find "new hardware", but them point to the specific drivers.

Wow it looks like you are right. Depending which web site you believe
I think the V600i is a V620. So then why do most of the retailers
charge more for it? Real strange.

It does look like my problem is with the drivers, but I am really out
of ideas unless someone has another set of drivers I can try or can
offer some advice. I have tried the 2.0.0.4 drivers installed from
two different inf files as well as the 2.0.0.3 driver files. My other
two Motorolas will work with any of the drivers, but with the new one,
it recognizes the phone, but I can't query it.

YES. Motorola support actually solved my problem. For some strange
reason some odd setting had been changed on my phone and a master
reset on the phone fixed the problem!!!

Try Mobiledit with whatever connection type you use. It has powerful drivers to detect many devices incl. V600 and is rich in features.
