With my old phone (Samsung sch 3500), I can put the phone on the desktop
charger and switch the phone on and make a call. Similarly, I can use
the phone in the car with it plugged into the car charger.

Last night my new Samsung A740 was being charged. I tried to switch on
the phone but it will not/cannot be switched on. I have not tried it in
    the car yet.

Previously I know that you can leave the phones on while charging except
that it takes longer to get fully charged.
Is it similar with the new phones or am I missing something? Can I make
calls while the phone is being charged either at home or in the car?

The ability to use a phone while in charger actually depends on the
phone model, and whether or not the manufacturer cut corners in the
charger design. I've encountered a few very cheap model phones that
have a charger which does NOT supply enough current to both charge the
battery and run the phone in talk mode at the same time. In such cases
either charging has stopped and the power supply is running the phone
only, or you're actually draining the battery (albeit a little slower
than if the phone and charger weren't connected), and the charging
    resumes when the call ends.

It's possible that with the A740, Samsung cut corners, and you will need
at least some charge left in the battery to use the phone, even when
    charging.

Thanks. I guess the only way to know the answer would be to test it out
and see if I can continue a conversation without being blown apart(my
fear) or without being disconnected when the battery totally drains.
I did call Samsung Tech service. To cut the long story short, the guy
    is of no help.

I haven't used the particular model about which you ask, but my personal
experience with other samsung models is that they will work while
charging. However, they don't like to "alter their state" while
charging. So a phone turned on while charging will be stubborn or
refuse to shut off, and vice versa.

Thanks. I feel much better knowing that I can plug the phone into the
car charger if the battery is low and I am stuck somewhere (provided
there is Sprintpcs signal , lol)

You can turn phone on and use while charging

I have an a740 and i can say that i have turned the phone on and off during charging. all you have to do it press and hold down the power button if you are charging. also you can just plug the phone in to the charger while talking. also to get a full charge when the phone is almost dead it only takes about 2-3 hours. if you have anymore questions about the phone feel free to email me.
