One reason I am hanging onto my V505 and my old AT&T rate
plan until they pry it out of my hands. I get a TON of text messages
a month, and as long as I can keep my old rate plan, I will

Yes, it does. That's why I had to have text messaging disabled on my
Cingular account. I was getting charged for incoming junk text. -Dave

yes they do. read the messaging section on cingular.com! you get charged for all incoming messages no matter if they are solicited or not, and if you read them or not. Stay away from jamster, voting for an american idle and all that crap unless you want to start getting spammed. If you use text, check out the data plans to save cash. I have an old grand fathered media plan where I get unlimited sms, mms and media net for 19 bux a month.

They still have a MEdia Works package for $19.99 that includes 1,000 text
messages, unlimited MMS and 5MB MEdia Net. You can also get unlimited MEdia
Net for $19.99 and pay-per-use for sms and mms.

I can see using up 1MB or 5MB of MEdia Net in a month, but do people really
send 30+ sms messages every single day??!!

Yes. At present, all nationwide US carriers do, the exception being
Cingular customers on Cingular Blue plans.

Depends on how many you get. There are text messaging bundles that you
    can buy.

Yes. In fact, there was a whole story done in the New York Times about
younger people getting hit with huge overages for text messages, because
they treated it like a mobile version of instant messaging.

Also, if someone gets long winded, and writes SMS messages that are
longer than 160 characters, Cingular will break the message up into
160-character chunks, each being one SMS message. The receiving phone
will then "concantenate" the separate chunks into something that LOOKS
like one message. So a particularly chatty person could easily send a
paragraph or two of text to you that is in fact, three or four SMS
messages, particularly if they're on a treo or blackberry and have a
qwerty keyboard to make typing easier.
