Telus' Official Stance on Downloading Ringtones

After many attempts to download a new ringtone for my Audiovox 8900 without paying Telus $2.00 for a midi clip, which seems a little steep to me, I figured I must be doing something wrong...

Apparently I wasn't, and Telus has "crippled" their phones to prevent downloading.

Taken right from Telus' FAQ
http://telusmobility.com/on/wweb/hel..._faqs.shtml#16

Quote:
Can I download ringtones, truetones, images or videos from any Web site?

No, TELUS Mobility manages the delivery of ringtones, truetones, images and videos on behalf of our clients to fulfill our legal obligation to ensure artists and content owners are rightfully compensated for licensing fees.

If you would like to see certain ringtones, truetones, images or videos added to our catalogue, please send an e-mail to: downloads.tm@telus.com. We welcome your suggestions and we will attempt to obtain the appropriate rights to the ringtone, truetone, image or video you suggest in order to fulfill your request. (Please note: timelines to obtaining rights to new selections can take anywhere from one to several weeks.)

TELUS Mobility is not responsible for any fees charged by a downloads site, or damage incurred to your phone, while attempting to download content from any sites other than those provided by TELUS Mobility as part of our downloads service. Any attempts to do so are solely at your own risk.
Well, whatever happened to fair use policy? It so happens that I own (legally) the CD for the ringtone song that I wish to use... so in fact the artist has already recieved his compensation.

I think it's time for a provider change

That's why I am with a GSM provider and I don't have to buy their crappy phones. I can by any gsm phone(with the right bands) and the data cable and never pay for ringtones. If you guys insist on staying with CDMA, why are you still with Telus? Bell is a million times better because their plans are so much better than those from Telus

yes telus cripples their phone software. still nbever stopped me from getting the ringtones and wallpapers i wanted on my phone. or off for that matter. i have this promotional plan from years back as well so I'm not so bad off with Telus. But I still severely dislike Telus.

Telus really needs to take a look at what they are doing. How are they going in comparison to other Canadian providers these days?

Has anyone figured out how to hack the Motorola v265 to get around Telus' lock? It natively accepts MP3 and MIDI files when attached to incoming messages. You can save them as your ringtone but Telus blocks this functionality. Any workaround?

from what i hear rogers took a hint from telus and now are locking their phones so you cant put free ringtones on their phones. but there is always a way around it. just hack the phone. so far i find the razr is the easiest phone to hack. i tried the lg535 but it was way too confusing for me. plus my lg broke.

Can you not upload ring tones via USB to the phone?

Re: Telus' Official Stance on Downloading Ringtones

There isn't good to it at all. I actually just got off the phone with Telus because I was interested in the situation, and according to them, disallowing uploading ring tones covers their ass in the sense of piracy. And even though you may have obtained the song legally, Telus has no way to prove that, so they lock out the capabilities altogether. And that is quoted straight from the rep I was speaking to.

In regards to "thebest", even though Telus is a CDMA phone company, there is only one GSM phone company in Canada, and that is Rogers. And guess what? Bell is not GSM, and they do not allow uploading ring tones, and nor does Rogers.

The issue's you have with telus, exist in all the carriers.

So, the other parts are what seperate the carriers, like customer servive, phone service ect.

This is what makes me keep an active line with telus for the past few years, i have others and use them, but i still do my main work on my telus phone.

Peace

i love my 6265i , but being a tide too telus. the only cell company here i have no choice other wise i go to fido or enything but Bell. i've tried almost all the hints loops around the copy right lock from telus. but the only thig it seems to fix this prob is to get the pc cord and go in side the programing of the phone.
using videos "amr" does not work on the 6265i 2007 ver.

Delete the 2 .DB files within your phones main directory, restart your phone. All the audio files on your phone can now all be used as ringtones.

Re: Telus' Official Stance on Downloading Ringtones

BTW, I consider Telus' position on this a load of crap. It an easy excuse to make it so that I can only use THEIR ringtones at a cost of $3.50 each. I can download the same (and complete) song from iTunes for $0.99. The proof of this is in the fact that I can download and play any MP3 file (legal or not) on my phone, I just can't use it as a rigntone.
