Hey guys, I'm new so please forgive me if this is in the wrong area.

I am a telus mike subscriber with three i580's on my account. Two of the phones are out of warrenty and are having lots of problems, (lost colours in screen etc.)

I wanted to upgrade one of my phones to the i465 clutch, but saw that on ebay I can get an unlocked one for about a third of the price (it's a boost mobile unlocked one) as one from telus. I did this once before about 3 years ago with an i735 and found out that you could not text from the unlocked phone.

My reading online has lead me to believe that the code plug could be modified to let texting work on unlocked iden phones on the telus mike network but I have not seen anything in any forum or post anywhere that addresses this for telus. There are lots of code plug mods for boost and for nextel but I haven't seen any for telus yet.

I've also heard from a telus rep that they use two gateways for texting, and mms and an sms which is what creates part of the problem to modify the code plug.

Can anyone help me, I really don't want to commit to a new 3 year deal?

    Thank you.

Hey, there isn't really anyway for us even as reps to get the code plugs, and yes we DO use two separate gateways to handle text and multimedia messages. You can use the unlocked handsets as they do run off of the iDen SIM card, but you're going to have the same issue being unable to text. I also can't gaurantee that your internet services for the clutch will work, as the browser uses some of the same gateway configuration as the mulitmedia message service.

I know this doesn't help you out too much, but as a whole, we dont support unlocked handsets as this drives down the revenue from services, so I dont see the correct codes ever being released to low level employee's...

From what I've read it seems that you need to get the code plug off of the phone you want to mod first and then change the settings and upload it again, but I could be wrong on this. I guess telus probably wouldn't release the proper code plug settings to reps either though.

I know that telus can't really support unlocked phones, but to be honest it would probably increase revenue from services if they didn't fight it so much. Every phone I bought requires a 3 year contract to get a decent price on it, but is only under warranty for 1 year. This would be fine if i could get a decent deal on a new phone when mine craps out but since I have to add another three years to my contract it seems pointless, especially considering that I can get a boost mobile version unlocked for the same price upfront as the Telus version on a three year deal. If I could get better local calling area on another service I would switch, and I'm honestly considering it. If Telus really wanted to keep customers they would allow them to use unlocked phones while not supporting them directly. There is a difference between supporting them, and making it near impossible to use them.

Oh agreed. Us reps NEVER get that kind of information, you'ld have to log about 20 calls in to Data Netwotrk Assistance for them to even consider releasing unlock codes.

Rogers local calling area for southern alberta is WAY larger than what Telus offers. Only thing that keeps me with them is my EPP plan, which is one of the best employee incentives
