Just purchased a mobile from Tesco,
Its locked to Tesco Mobile, I was hoping my O2 sim would work in it but no
    such luck,
Its a Nokia 6030, any ideas how to unlock without having to spend £30 on
    Tesco mobile first?
    Thanks, Steve.

Thanks so much for the link, got a prompt reply with unlocking code, worked
    a treat.
    Nice one.

Yes, just go to an unlocker at a Market stall or CBS, and pay £10.

Don't bother with these web-sites that allegedly provide an unlocking
code for a given IMEI: I've never ever got one of these to work.

Yes.....I've just unlocked a Nokia 6030 (from Orange) today for free!
    Take the following steps:

    1) Go to http://www.unlockme.co.uk/downloads.html and download the
'DCT4 Code Calculator by Hollowman 5.4' on that page. Install it and
    run it

    2) Key in the IMEI number (under the battery)

    3) Select 'United Kingdom' and 'Tesco Mobile'

    4) Make sure ASIC is set to '2'

    5) Click on 'Use box serial id' and type in '32836'

    6) Click on 'Calculate'

    6) THIS IS IMPORTANT: Contrary to the instructions on the above
website, the 6030 will NOT accept an unlock code until you actually
insert a sim card from a different network and turn the phone on. You
will get a message saying 'Phone restricted' (or something like that)
but click on the option 'Undo'. An input box is displayed.

    7) Key in the last of the codes that are displayed in the unlock
program (the 7th one with '+7#' at the end). Follow the instructions
on the above web site if you don't know how to find 'p' and '+' and
    'w' on your keypad

    8) You should get a message saying something like 'restriction
    removed'

Hm. That's quite informative. I've never got one of those sites to work
    before.

How do we know it's ASIC 2 ? Is a phone of a specific model always tied
to a specific ASIC, or can several different ASICs appear in different
revisions of what is ostensibly the same model ?

    > 5) Click on 'Use box serial id' and type in '32836'

Where do you get "32836" from ?

Hmm. Is this sort of thing Universal ? I've tried it both with and
without SIMs installed; it never occurred to me to try having
the "new" SIM installed at the point of code-entry.

Why do these calculators always give a LIST of codes ? Why can't they
just give the single one that works ? Surely no-one's going to be interested
in "unrestricting their phone just a little bit" : they're going to
want to unrestrict all the locks, surely ?

Seems to me someone ought to produce unlocking software, which tells you
    how to use unlocking software.

Because each code opens a different lock or set of locks. For Orange you'll
usually get away with using code five, whereas code seven should (but
    doesn't always) release all locks.

    > Why can't they

    For the reasons above.

Yes, but you can't always use code seven as it will fail on some handsets
depending on which locks have been set by the operator.

Now there you have a good point.
