Just trying to update myself on available standalone GSM modems with a
serial port (ie not ones that plug directly into a laptop but ones
that are freestanding and can connect to any suitable RS232 serial
device - though USB might also be of interest if available.)
Of particular interest are any specially designed with low power
consumption so as to be suitable for mounting at a remote site with no
mains power and only very limited solar/battery power available.
Anyone have any info/recommendations on new modem introductions or
updated models, web links etc.
Thanks

How about one of these,
http://www.businessshop.bt.com/invt/bbw242
It is a stand alone unit that takes Vodafone 3G / GPRS mobile connect cards
and has the advantage of being able to support multiple connections.
However it requires either a wireless connection or a standard ethernet
cable connection, not RS232 so maybe not
