Isn't this profile designed for devices like hand-free car kits?

A phone doesn't really need this profile and I've yet to see any with it
    on.

Yes it needs it to allow the SIM to be read from the Hands Free Kit you
    mention.

Most (if not all) of the Nokia Bluetooth enabled phones support this,
    Samsung appear not too.

When trying to send SMS from a Palm T2 / T3 via bluetooth on a 6230i it
seems to call up this profile. Palm blame Nokia - Nokia blame Palm.
    Doesn't happen on a T5 though

    Yes

It needs it if it is to be used with that sort of car kit!

Basically with sim access profile, the car kit does ALL the telephone
bit, and is only reading the sim card by bluetooth.
