I have a two-year-old Orange pay-as-you-go mobile, and I'm thinking of
buying a new one. Could I use the old sim card in the new phone?
Also, my current one isn't dual-band or tri-band, although the one I'm
thinking of buying is tri-band. Would the new one work in America, when
using my old sim card?

Yes.
If you buy a new phone from Orange, you get a new sim too, which *may* be
more useful than the one you have.

As long as you are in an area with 1900 coverage. It is still very patchy
outside major cities and interstate routes. Also note that PAYG roaming
charges are even more exorbitant than contract ones. If you're going to be
there for more than a few days get a local SIM card.

Certainly. It doesn't hurt to register the new SIM, and you'll please the
salesman if you do, he won't get his commission otherwise ;-)

Yes you can use your old sim card in a new phone so long as its locked to
the same network or unlocked.
Yes if you get a unlocked Triband you can use it in the USA.
If you get a USA T-Mobile sim card you can make there is Coverage where your
going at http://www.t-mobile.com/prepaid/coverage.asp

And they should transfer your number to the new sim, and will usually
give you an extra £1 credit for doing it as well. Come to it, most
places won't let you out of the door without registering the sim now
anyway.

I heard that the new SIMs have more momory or something like that so it
*is* worthwhile to register the new SIM.

Could I ask in which ways it might be more useful?

So I couldn't use an Orange-only Triband phone in the USA?

Nope - unless, as the other poster said, it was unlocked.
Other option is to have int'l roaming but that will prove expensive
overseas.

The main ones are more storage for text messages/contact lists.
Occasionally faster SIMs as well. And finally, just the fact it's more
recent.

There is no reason to do so. If you want to keep the same number it's
not a problem, but if you use the old SIM you cut yourself off from
certain services and promotions.

There is very limited coverage in the USA in any case on Orange JT, but
yes it will work.

You could easily use it in the USA, Orange UK have roaming agreements
with US networks.
What you mean is that he could not insert another SIM into it, for
example from an American network.
