It's not a hidden menu, somewhere in Settings or Config on nearly any
    phone.

Go to Network Selection > Manual > Scan> then from the list choose "3" NOT
"3 3G", then select. "3" is the assigned network name for "O2" on 3
phones, similar to Virgin replacing T-Mobile etc.

This should lock it to the chosen network until you either rescan or switch
to automatic selection. This feature is essentially to lock a preferred
network when roaming overseas, but O2 is essentially "roaming" in the same
    way.

Actually it was deliberately hidden and still is on nearly every 3
handset. They don't really want people locking down to the o2 signal as
it costs them money to carry those calls.

Someone Im sure will confirm, but an unlocked 6630 (maybe one sourced NOT
from 3) has this selection and is still enabled

Works fine on my 3 branded and locked LG, and the one before that. AIUI
"Network Selection" is a standard GSM specification, and if that menu
option was hidden, then I wouldn't be able to manually select a net when
overseas, and by definition prevent me from choosing 3's preferred roaming
partners. This is quite important as quite a bit of the 3G content is FREE
to browse, even when roaming, provided you are on the correct net. Same
thing with direct voicemail access etc.

Network selection and network mode are not the same thing.

Network mode? You've lost me there.

Selecting "3" Manual forces it to stick on the O2 virtual network. When
you network scan you get in the list "3 3G" and "3", the latter being O2.

When this is done the indicator on the display changes to Roaming and loses
    the 3G icon.

I'm not sure what you mean, but this is a tried and tested method of
forcing the phone to register on 2G irrespective of whether there is a 3G
    signal available.

I cannot say for sure, but I have yet to find a 2G or 3G phone which does
not have the un-hidden ability to manually scan and select networks. You
would need to find someone with the phone and have a look.

According to the user guide P92
    (http://nds1.nokia.com/phones/files/g...6280_UG_en.pdf):

Menu > Settings > Phone > Operator Selection > Manual

It will then scan, present you with a list, and then simply select the
desired network ("3" not "3 3G"). Note that if you want to use 3G services
you will need to repeat this process and select "3 3G", or switch back to
"Automatic" and power cycle the phone.

I find it highly unlikely that this menu option will be restricted, as I
said in another post it is essential for international roaming.

Once again, the ability to manually select a network is not the same
thing as being able to switch to a 2G only mode.

That would explain a few things.

Indeed. I know that. What the OP is talking about is the ability to
effectively switch the phone into a 2G-only mode. This is not the same
as being able to manually select a network.

Can the nokia 6280 be forced to lock on to the 2g signal. I know the
nokia 7600 was done with a factory reset. Any help appreciated

Unless of course, the network provider has seen fit to remove the option
    via custom firmware!

Well my two different model LGs have always locked to O2 when set up this
way even when I am constantly moving in and out of 3G coverage areas.

The OP asked if this could be done, the method works for me and a few other
people I know. Yes, I do understand that there are other solutions such as
disabling UMTS in the firmware, but why use a sledgehammer to crack a nut?
I can switch my lights off by going to the fusebox and switching off the
mains, but I find the lightswitch simpler :-) If a *simple* solution works,
    then it works.
