There are several ways to achieve this.
Primarily:
1) Connect to a website. Register your details and your mobile phone
number. Whenever you want to send a text, access the website and send the
text. The main disadvantage to this is that unless it is the website of the
network operator and the phone number you supply belongs to that network
operator, when the text is sent, it will not look like it came from your
mobile. When you get a reply to that text, it won't go to your phone, it
will go to your account on the website. Therefore if you text a friend that
you are going to meet them in a few minutes, you're not going to get any
reply to your phone unless you hang around and wait for it by checking your
account on the website.
2) Get some phone software that connects your phone to your computer. Good
for syncing MS Outlook contacts as well. Whenever you send a text, you open
up a program (very email client like). The program communicates with the
phone and sends the text that way. The program you use largely depends on
the phone you are using. Connecting the phone to the PC can be by the data
cable supplied by the phone, an IRDA (infrared) cable if your phone supports
infrared) or bluetooth.
I used to use 1). Not I use 2) and it is by far the best way. You don't
have worried such as an internet connection or ensuring that the website is
up and running and working. You don't have to worry about your phone not
getting any replies to texts. You can also sync and transfer other data,
e.g. contacts, images, songs, etc.
