My son has managed to lose his new mobile phone (bless!); doesn't know
whether it's permanently gone (ie, whether it's just misplaced and will
turn up one day, or whether it's been either nicked, or found and
appropriated by someone else. The number isn't answering, so either
the phone's switched off, or someone has removed and discarded his SIM.

The SIM was PAYG, with about 50p credit left, so am not unduly
concerned about its loss; but if the mobile's been nicked I want to
report it (I know the IMEI number) so at least whoever's got it can't
    use it.

Question - if I do go ahead and get the phone blocked, and then it
turns up under his mattress in a few weeks, is it possible to get it
unblocked again? Or is it a one-way street?

    Thanks
    David

Shouldn't be a problem, if its found.
Just inform the network and they should un-bar it for you..
you might run into problems if you have claimed thru the insurance for a new
phone, the old one would then belong to the insurance company so woud have
    to be returned if found..

    Thanks for that.

Following on from that, just wondering, presumably if someone has nicked
and is using the phone with a new SIM, the IMEI number will be being
logged on some network's records somewhere... presumably there's no way
for a member of the public to find this out (ie, if its being used or not?)

If nothing else, at least we could then stop hunting for the bloody thing!
