    Got mugged on Thursday night.

    They got 2 Three mobiles, one contract, one PAYG. Naturally, I
    blocked them both, not that the PAYG had any credit on it. Wasn't
    even switched on.

    I am hoping my home insurance will cover them but in any event need to
    know a few things please:

    1. Is there one Three office to call that is likely to be better to
    resolve this than another?
    2. Do they have to charge for replacement SIMs? Hope not ( I spend a
    lot with them)
    3. Can they supply a PAC for the PAYG SIM without it being active? I
    am thinking it easier to port it to a Virgin or O2 online SIM for
    which I have some spare handsets.
    4. If I am not insured, what are your suggestions for options to
    replace the Three handset? A new contract-free one would be
    ridiculously expensive, so I guess it means buying a PAYG offer and
    putting the new contract SIM in it. Any other suggestions please?

    Why did you have TWO phones! One is enough for most people, especially if
    it is on the same network.

    You're better off asking "3" questions about YOUR contracts with them and
    the terms and conditions they sent to you which you read and agreed to.
    Then you will be in no doubt what they can do for you. The same for whoever
    your insurance policy is with - you're best contacting them direct.

    The reason for doing this is to make sure you get the correct information
    relating to YOUR circumstances. If you were to phone and quote someone
    from a newsgroup they might laugh as the information may not be correct or
    corret for your circumstances.

    I would be on the phone to "3" and the insurance company with the Crime
    Reference Number you obtained from the Police when you reported the
    mugging/assault and theft of your property. Next time carry something to
    sort scumbags like that out.

    Indeed. I sometimes carry three..! (Oh for a phone that allows more than
    one SIM to be used simultaneously..!)

    So do I - contract phone, client phone (sometimes when on callout), and P&G
    phone (something for the weekend...)

    Mine are main phone (was Orange contract, now on Tesco Mobile), Orange
    PAYG (need this as it has the original Out Here pack on it for SMS
    messages) and a work phone. I obviously only need the work phone with me
    while at work.

    Well, cheers for your help Mike. I'm 6 ft 2 in and not what anyone
    would call an easy target. I'm not sure which side of the bed you got
    out of, but thanks for making me feel better about being in the wrong
    place at the wrong time. Just hope it never happens to you.

    The reason I was carrying two phones (three actually but they only got
    two) was that I just took a new contract (with Three) and turned the
    previous contract (also with Three) into PAYG. As you will know,
    since both old and new were with Three it is not possible to port the
    number, so easier just to carry my old mobile for a few weeks and give
    people who call my old number (now a PAYG) my new contract number.

    In any event, questions like number 4 in my list would still be valid,
    or what the heck is the point of this newsgroup? I've lost count of
    the number of times I've been going to do something in life and
    someone has suggested a better/cheaper/faster way based on their
    increased knowledge.

    I was not suggesting I call up Three and quote from a Newsgroup, but
    knowing what others think and their experiences is always helpful.
    Ever heard of the saying *Knowledge is Power* ? Doesn't mean you have
    to make use of the knowledge, but making choices with all the facts to
    hand is always better than making decisions in ignorance.

    The same reason I do not carry a weapon to sort these scumbags out.
    The facts point to the likelihood of any knife or whatever ending up
    being used on me. It was bad enough losing two phones, 80 quid cash,
    getting a ripped suit and coat and blood all over the place, without
    ending up in hospital or a coffin. Luckily I managed to keep hold of
    my wallet, credit cards and filofax thing. Not being a trained SAS
    agent or Ninja Turtle, I wasn't able to do much in the flash of
    seconds when it happened other than get a dose of shock. Maybe you
    might have been able to overpower the two of them and leave them
    neatly tied up for the coppers. Sadly not me.

    Just ignore him - I did write a long rambling post which bunked most of
    his points, but it just sounded petty.

    Your question was perfectly reasonable, just a shame that you didn't
    actually get any helpful replies.

    hero !!

    Personally, if I let myself get mugged I would be too embassed to
    publish it on the internet .. you should go and join
    a boxing club/learn self defence rather than wallowing in self pity !!

    Who said I was a hero? Not me. The heroes in this world are
    generally not so obvious and you certainly ain't one, 'mate'.

    Of course, you being such a hard man, if you were looking for someone
    to mug you probably would pass by all the obvious targets, and tackle
    someone who looks like a brick toilet. It'd be a challange for you,
    wouldn't it?

    But I forgot that I 'let' myself get mugged. You are right. I was
    too stupid to get a cab. But as for being embarrassed about it? FFS!
    If it happened to you I'd like to see you be such a smart arse. We
    can all sit at home and imagine ourselves as Mr J Bond, putting out
    boxing club training to good use. But then some of us actually leave
    our armchairs and explore the real world. And when bad things happen,
    we're man enough not to pretend it didn't shake us.
