water damage

Daughter dropped her sony d750 in the bath tonight! Bloody kids!! I
have removed battery & simcard and placed the phone in airing cupboard.
Does anyone know of someone in St Albans area that might be able to
resurrect phone?
I have Googled water damage and the advice seesm to be to rinse in
de-ionised water and leave in airing cupboard for a week to dry out.
Will a professional repairer be able to do better than this.
TIA for any advice.
Alec

I'm sure it will do wonders for the plastic too. Not.

Not likely as the D750 is a T-Mobile version of the K750i.

Personally I'd strip the phone down until I'd got the circuit board in my
hand. At that point, it really needs cleaning in an ultrasonic bath, but
without access to one rinsing thoroughly with deionised water would have to
suffice. Clean the board carefully with an old toothbrush and leave it to
dry for several days (the longer the better). Reassemble the phone,
possibly replace the battery (and maybe the screen) and hope for the best.

I would normally dismantle the item in question and then wipe with
cotton wool dipped in isopropanol (aka isopropyl alcohol or IPA). IPA
is also highly volatile, so it will have all evaporated by the time
you've finished reassembling it.

IPA, and of course cotton buds, are available from any good chemist.
IPA is also the active ingredient in "screen wipes" and various other
computer cleaning mixtures and you could clean the phone with those,
but that tends to be an expensive way to buy IPA.

You have done the right thing.

Leave the phone to dry for a few days, and try it out.

I am assuming that the bath water was fairly clean, and the immersion was
brief, so I would not go dunking the phone in more fluid just to make sure
it all gets wet.

If it does not work, then try more drastic action (rinsing in deionised
water / alcohol) etc..

The SIM will have almost certainly survived (I have one working here that
spent three weeks immersed in a bog cistern!), so if you get another phone
just dry it off and plug it in.

Thanks to all for the advice. As the immersion was brief, I'll leave it
in the airing cupboard for a week and keep my fingers crossed.
Next time I'll keep the upgrade for myself, or at least until my
faithfull 6310i gives up!

Cheers
Alec

Re: water damage

Left it in the airing cupboard for a week but the bath seems to have
knackered it!

Screen is dead, well at least the backlight behind it is. Switching it
on shows a very faint Sony Ericsson
logo if phone is tilted to the light although the lights behind the
keypad light up! I've tried phoning from another phone it but it goes
straight to Orange voicemail (it is a K750i BTW - sorry about error in
orig post - but no insurance). Additionally it can only be switched off
by removing battery, although it can be switched on using the on/off
switch.

I can only think of 3 options now a) Take it to O2 to get a repair
estimate - it was supplied as an O2 upgrade b) Take it to an
independant repairer for estimate - any suggestions for St
Albans/Watford or close. c) Ebay it as scrap. or d) Last resort, claim
off House Contents accidental Insurance for which I think there is
£100 XS so probably not worth it.

TIA for any advice.
