Port to new contract with same provider?

I'm on an Orange OVP 200 pay monthly contract. If I see a good deal on
a new Orange contract (with a new phone) can I transfer my current
mobile number onto the new contract?

No chance doing it directly.

You'll have to port your number to something like a PAYG SIM on another
network, and then port it back in to the new contract.

why not just call them up, go through to disconnections, and tell them you
want to stop your contract purely so you can get the deal you've seen ...
tell them what the deal is and see what they say. They usually match at
least the cost of the handset ... if that's not close enough to the deal
then you can always port out then back in as David has already said. Even
though O are still going to have you as a customer at the end of the day it
still looks like they've lost someone if you cancel your contract.

I thought that Orange were now not really doing that. I've heard a lot
of people saying they phoned up to cancel/get PAC and without any
attempt to change their mind, handed over the PAC immediately.

So if I get the PAC then I can order a new Orange phone / SIM and port
my existing Orange number?

No. I believe he was referring to them not making much effort to retain
customers.

Certainly in my experience when I phoned up to cancel my contract and go
on PAYG they didn't make any attempt to stop me cancelling.

Orange don't seem interested in keeping 'low spend' customers at the
end of their initial contract period. From all the reports I have
seen, 'low spend' seems to be sub £80-£100 per month.

Only real solution, as had been said before, is to port the number to
a PAYG SIM and after taking out a brand new Orange deal, port the
number back in.

my bill has only been over £50 once, phoned them up a couple of months ago
and said I want to cancel because I could get the phone I wanted (Samsung
D600) for free with a new contract through OSPS but the web site upgrade was
quoting me £129.99. The guy said no problem we'll match the price "the web
site lies sometimes" and a few days later I had my D600 with a new 12month
contract and kept my number.

I'm into my 3rd year with Orange so I'm not exactly a long standing customer
either ... btw they did the same thing the time before when I upgraded from
a Motorola T720 to a Motorola V600.

I guess it just depends on who you get on the other end of the phone.

Certainly the reports about not being fussed with customers leaving were
in the last 2 months. I think before that they were more generous with
offers (well, they'd actually *make* offers, rather than just handing
out a PAC).

When did you get your offer?

Wow, that surprises me a lot. At the moment I'm spending maybe £35-£40 a
month which I consider to be highly excessive so I'm trying to cut down.
£80-£100 is maybe reasonable if it's being used for business purposes
but no wonder there's such a load of rubbish TV shows on like "Beat the
Bailiff" [1] if people are regularly wasting £80-£100 a month on their
mobile.

Chris,

I can only suggest that you ring them and try. Make sure that you talk
to retention's rather than normal Customer Services. If you do get
offered a good deal please post back here to let us know.

As a previous poster pointed out, it is in the last two or three
months that they seem to have become even more 'hard nosed'. I had
been an Orange contract customer since their inception but they were
unable to offer me a good enough deal to stay, even compared with the
high street.

I ported my number to a special deal on O2 from Mobileshop. There are
little or no restrictions with cross network calling and 0844, 0845,
0870 and 0871 come out of my inclusive minutes. If I send texts when
abroad, these cost me 4 texts each out of my inclusive text allowance.
In addition I can view my calls and text usage with about a two day
delay, online. Something which Orange never ever seemed to master.

I used to praise Orange and recommend them to everyone, but not
anymore. If you are a low to medium spender you can do much better
than Orange these days. And to be honest, that is probably exactly
what Orange want.
