My handset is not displaying the voicemail notification icon. It's an
unlocked Orange handset on an 02 contract, so I guess that could be the
problem. Or is it just that 02 don't do it that way, they seem to want
to send me a text or call me up whenever I have voicemanil, and it's
really bugging me.

O2 don't do it that way, neither did Vodafone, but I think they may do now,
can't understand why O2 don't implement it, crazy not to.

They don't do it because it was never part of the original GSM specs.
Orange and 121 as they then were used a slightly different specification
which allows for the voicemail icon.
I am now on Tesco Mobile, which uses O2 (was on Orange) and the standard
notification is a text message. I don't see it as a problem, it's just
pressing the "1" key to call voicemail rather than pressing the menu key.
Maybe 1 extra button press..?

I expect the answer will be something along the lines of "it is used in
other countries, ie: USA"; but why do manufacturers build this voicemail
icon functional thingy into their phones? Just an added extra I presume?

But there HAS been a way (in fact more than one way) to manipulate an icon
in the GSM standard for years now, so that's hardly an excuse.
The real answer, presumably, is that O2 don't consider it an important
customer requirement.

Vodafone now do, although I think it's only with their 242 -
vodafone.net message service.

Re: 02 voicemail notification
OK, I found out about it, it's in the GSM standard but the method used
by most operators is a PCM non-GSM standard that came in later. O2 were
originally Cellnet and had a pure GSM system which they've never seen
fit to upgrade as far as voicemail notification goes.
What's annoying about the texts is that you have to delete them
manually otherwise your phone fills up. The notification icon goes away
on its own.

You could of course change the notification so that you are called by
voicemail.

Which is even more annoying than the text message.

Yeah but means you get to listen one more time to that annoying ringtone
you purchased. ;-)

It's not a phone function, it's a network function. The phone has the
ability to display the icon because it might be used on a network that
supports it. Not all networks do.

Again, an extra button press or two. Big deal..! I actually like it in
some ways, it can be useful to know at a later date what time a message
was received.
