I was just wandering if I can put a Tesco mobile sim card into an o2 phone (Tesco is powered by O2)?

Generally not.
The phone will be locked to the provider, in many cases, even if they
buy the network services from a third party.
It may be possible to unlock your phone, but it depends on model, and at
last count, there were at least three on the market...
It is generally possible to pay the company money to unlock the phone
too.

It's more a case of "it depends" rather than "generally not". I popped
an Energis Mobile SIM into a locked Orange phone, and it worked just
fine.
You'll just have to try it and see, but have a backup plan of getting
the phone unlocked in case it doesn't work.

I have put an O2 into a Tesco locked phone and it did not work until the
phone was unlocked.

Doesn't mean it won't work the other way round.

Wrong answer.
Generally yes. As Tesco is a subnet off O2, you can normally put a
Tesco SIM in an O2 locked phone. You will not be able to do it the
other way around and put an O2 SIM in a locked Tesco Mobile handset.

O2 don't normally GID1 lock their phones to sim types,
so yes you can put any O2 virtual like Tesco Sim in it
e.g. Virgin mobile do GID1 lock, so they are a compleatly different story

Tesco, like Virgin, and Voda do normally GID1 sim lock their phones.
O2, T Mobile, and Orange don't.
All SP lock their branded phones
Having the phone unlocked clears all the locks
It's a game isn't it
