Advice Needed about blocking 'Private Number Calls'

I don't know how, but I appear to have either got myself onto a
'calling list' or someone is doing it maliciously, but I am receiving a
lot of private number calls. When I answer the phone, even after a
couple of seconds after the phone initially rings - there is nobody
there.
I know that a lot of marketing places use autodiallers and the call
routes to the first person that answers - but even when I have answered
the phone within 1-2 seconds of it ringing, there is still nobody there
and the line just goes dead.
I use a 6680 and have already called 3, who say that there is no way
for them to stop these calls reaching my handset.
They have also stated that they can only change the number for a fee as
the calls are not threatening. Changing my number would be a last
resort anyway.
I need to keep my phone switched on at night time, as my wife has
elderly parents and we need to be available to them for as much time as
possible, but the calls have started to come through quite late at
night and usually cause a mad rush for the phone when it does ring. (
you always seem to think the worst!)
Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

I think you may be a little "buggered" (< That's a general term for
"stuck!", of course)

You could set different ring tones for all your KNOWN callers, and those
that are NOT known, set the tone to silent. You won't be (audibly)
disturbed, but would still be able to "see" who's calling.

That may create a further problem though, should you receive an "unknown"
call from your parents neighbour or someone.

Maybe someone else may have a resolve for you??

Don't know if it'll work on Three, but the T-Mobile
rep I saw on Monday said that if you call them (T-
Mobile) and claim that you had developed a medical
condition that affected your memory, they could give
you a new, more memorable (read "GOLD") number.....
might be worth a punt with Three....

Have you registered with the TPS(telephone preference service) once done
it takes up tp 28days to stop the unwanted calls.

That sounds like what ofcom calls a "silent call" - see
<http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/mofaq/telecoms/silentfaqs/>. They have,
at last, decided to become more strict about these. See in particular
the "how to complain".

As it says on the ofcom site, the first thing to do is register the
number with TPS <http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/> if you have not yet
done so.

There was a thread some time ago about software for Symbian phones like
yours to automatically reject calls based on CLI or lack thereof. It would
seem to be ideal for your situation.
