Im using orange payg. normally i can send and receive email
directly via imap/smtp to my own server. last few days receiving
is ok. but i get an error message when trying to send an email
    via my own smtp service.

Whats going on. I have tried several different servers.

Are orange going to force us to use their smtp server?

    A.

Are you sure you don't need to now authenticate to send email via smtp?
Generally speaking you need to, although it's strange that you were able to
    do so before.

The only smtp server I've ever needed authentication with is gmail, but
that does also use a non standard port.

Usually though you don't need to authenticate because you are connected to
the ISP, so it's done by IP range.
Otherwise you will need to authenticate or it won't let you send at all.
Originally SMTP was meant to be open, but this is an unworkable solution now
    due to spammers.

A few weeks since you posted - is it still the same I wonder ?

As mentioned elsewhere the Orange smtp server seems to have had some
    changes applied
    recently.

I'm not on PAYG but on contract and can send (via GPRS) mail using
either smtp.orange.net or an external smtp relay without any obvious
    problem.
