I've acquired my late mother's phone, which I thought might be useful as a
spare. It's a Nokia 3410 on Virgin PAYG. I have the Nokia manual (two of
them, actually, for some reason) but no details of the Virgin setup.
My main phone is on a Vodafone business contract, and I've never used PAYG
- can anyone point me to a how-to that will tell me how to find out how
much credit the phone has on it and what I have to do to top it up
(assuming I want to ...).
I tried my Vodafone SIM in the 3410, and (unsurprisingly) it says "Invalid
SIM" which I take it means it's locked to Virgin. Can it be unlocked? What
I'd really like to be able to do is to hand onto this as a spare for my
Vodafone account (or maybe try to persuade my mother-in-law to swap it for
her 6310i which she got as a cast-off when No.2 daughter upgraded and which
she certainly doesn't make full use of).
Virgin's website is a waste of time - it doesn't seem to contain anything
of conceivable interest to grown-ups at all!
Cheers,
Daniel

Google 'Unlock Virgin Phone' which will give you some information on
unlocking it.

Hi Daniel,
To find out how much credit is on the phone dial 789
To top up the phone, use either a Top Up voucher available from many hgh
street stores, list here:
http://www.virginmobile.com/mobile/m..._where2buy.jsp
Or you can speak to Virgin Customer services by choosing the appropriate
option after dialling 789, and get them to send you a swipe card to link to
the phone. This can then be used at any post office etc to top up the phone
with any amount (starting at 5 quid). I recommend this option.
Remember to top up the phone at least once every 365 days, or the sim will
be switched off the network.
Regards

Try dialling 789 for the credit balance.
Virgin will unlock it for free if £30 has been credited of use something
like a Crux code generator.

All information is on the Virgin website, but as you can't be bothered
making the effort to read it then I will tell you that dialling 789 will
tell you about credit.
If you want a phone unlocked look in any car boot sale or market, even phone
shops.

Not so. They don't cancel numbers.

However if you go to The Link in Wrexham, North Wales, the ignorant
twats that work there will say that it's illegal to unlock a phone,
which is a complete lie.

Thanks ... that's the customer service (voice) number, isn't it? Is there no
way to display the balance on the phone itself? (How primitive!)

Yeah, I got that bit (OK, so the website does have *some* info for grown-ups
<smile>) ... but what does one then of with the voucher? How do you use
them? You'd think there'd be a how-to page on the website, but no ...

Bugger ... I wonder how long I've got?
Cheers,
Daniel.

Thanks. I have a note in my mother's writing with her mobile number on it
and "£18" ... which I suppose it the balance she had on it at some time. I
doubt that she'd ever topped it up much beyond that (£20?) as she didn't
use the phone much.

Now that I did know, Nokia standard!
Cheers,
Daniel.

A voucher has a strip of silver or gold that you scratch away to reveal a
number (same as a lottery scratch card). You call 789 and select 'topup wth
a voucher'. Then when promped to do so, you key in the number exactly from
the voucher (you may have to end by pressing the hash key #).
Your talk time account will then be credited with the value of the voucher.
Simple really. Hang up... Your done....

Now you know why they're stuck working for a piss pot company.
Just look down on them smugly, and imagine their joke of a payslip at the
end of each month ;o)
