I've been using smtp.orange.net successfully for outgoing mail for a couple
of years now. It's really handy since you can send mail from any email
client attached anywhere to the internet. Obviously you need to
authenticate to the server with the credentials set up for the Orange
    account.

As of a couple of days ago the server has refused to accept email from my
address, which is NOT [email protected].

    The error message is

'Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
    ....

553 <my_name@my_real_domain_name.net>: Sender address rejected: not owned by
    user <my_orange_user_logon_name>'

It looks like the server will no longer accept mail unless the from address
is [email protected]. I've raised a query with Orange, but has anyone
    else noticed this?

I would hope they don't force you to use an @orange email address, it was one
of the reasons I ditched O2.

I use my palm to post to mailing lists, which authenticate to my e-mail
address. I do not want to have to subscribe twice, and or have to recieve mail
    in two different places.

The whole point of mobile email is you can seamlessly carry on with your life
wherever you happen to be. Different at home and away email addresses would be
    stupid.

Yes, I noticed this a couple of days ago too.

Mike, is this a problem for you, and if so how did you 'fix' it?

BTW nothing heard from Orange yet.

I have just had this from Orange:

This is an important message about email.
We are updating the Orange email service and if you use your
phone's mailbox to retrieve your emails, or a PC client such
as Outlook, you will need to make a change to your settings
so that the service continues to work. If you only ever access
your emails by directly logging into the Orange website then
you don't need to do anything and you can stop reading.
To make the change to your setting just go to
    http://www.orange.co.uk/emailsettings
and we'll talk you through it step by step.
We recommend you make the change now, however you have up until
the 27th April 2006. If you haven't made the change by this date
then your service will no longer work.

Thank you for forwarding that Trev.

I just tried it. The authentication works OK, but smtp.orange.net still
rejects messages unless MAIL FROM: uses an orange.net email address.

The error returned is as before e.g.

'553 <my_name@my_real_domain_name.net>: Sender address rejected: not owned
    by user [email protected]'

Surely lots of Orange customers use email addresses from other domains and
yet use smtp.orange.net to send mail e.g. from their phones?

Still no reply from Orange on this issue.

But this and the website (which is the same) doesn't actually make
mention of sending mail via smtp.o.net or otherwise.

It says "......if you use your phone's mailbox to retrieve your
emails....". I appreciate this could just be the no brainers who wrote
this stuff not really knowing what they are on about especially in view
    of the problems reported.

I have however over the weekend and this morning had no problem sending
mail via smtp.o.n (not using authentication) over GPRS using a Psion
    Revo+.

    Yes it does...
    http://www.orange.co.uk/emailandorga...explained.html
.... and I was using this server successfully until the date of my OP.

Have you tried from Outlook or Outlook Express with a from address which is

smtp.orange.net still works OK for me as below.

I don't use Outlook/OE at all but the inbuilt e-mail client (which does
not have smtp authentication built in) on my Revo+.

I've sent several mails yesterday and this morning with different "from"
addresses none of which are @orange.net and all arrived OK.

Sample header of an e-mail sent to a Freeserve address:

    Received: from smtp.orange.net (unknown [193.252.23.21])
by mwinf3102.me.freeserve.com (SMTP Server) with ESMTP id

Same this morning too on my not very used much Laptop (WIN95, non OE)
that I fired up. Playing with the from address though I have found that
orange.smtp.net does reject a mail if the from domain is invalid.

    553 <[email protected]>:
Sender address rejected: Domain not found

A slightly different 553 but I'm not sure if this is something new
or not though as I haven't knowingly used an invalid "from" address
    before.

Using OL/OE to send mail to smtp.orange.net has always required
    authentication with <orangelogonname> and password.
They are changing this to <orangephonenumber> and password from 27.04.06.
Without authentication but using a valid orange.net email address I get

554 <validFQDN[validIP]>: Client host rejected: Access denied

Maybe because you used GPRS your email client is treated as part of the
Orange network, and so the mobile phone number authenticates you.

Using OL/OE from a non-Orange broadband connection my email client is not
treated as part of the Orange network, and so requires explicit
    authentication to smtp.orange.net.

With authentication, but using a valid non-Orange email address I get

553 <[email protected]>: Sender address rejected: not owned by user
    <orangephonenumber>@orange.net

I'd be interested to know if you can send email from your laptop to
    smtp.orange.net over a non-GPRS (e.g. broadband) connection from a
non-Orange email address, explicitly authenticating to smtp.orange.net.

The penny has just dropped and I'm breathing a sigh of relief here.

It had not occured to me that the discussion was about non-orange connections,
I had read all the mentions of Outlook as using a laptop connected to orange by
    either a mobile or datacard.

I was assuming (dangerous) that you were referring to a Orange
Connection (eg GPRS). Reading your original post again I realise you
    weren't !

Using a GPRS connection it does seem, as you would expect/hope [1] and
your GPRS connection authenticates you as a valid user of that smtp
    server.

[1] The same applied when I had a T-Mobile account however
towards the end of 2003 they added a requirement of smtp-auth
on their smtp server even when connected over T-M GPRS. Seemed
an unnecessary hoop to jump through and if your client didn't
have smtp-auth a right pain - no idea if its the same now.

    Nope :-(

I see exactly the same as you when trying to use smtp.orange.net
    from an ADSL connection.

Without any authentication regardless of who "From", as expected I get
    thrown off with "Access denied".

With authentication mail is rejected if the sending address **is not**
validated against your login in details [2]. I get the same "not owned
by user" 553 message as above. Using a fictitious or somebody else's
valid username seems to be rejected too.

[2] My forgotten Orange e-mail address was/is in the form of
[email protected] and either this or [email protected] is accepted.

I would seem then that at the moment to use the Orange smtp server from
anything but an Orange GPRS connection [3] you are going to have to have
your orange e-mail address as the sender ! Will this change later in
the month I wonder ? I hope not.

[3] No idea about mobile dialup over Orange.

If you need an independent smtp-auth mail relay then the service
available from Gradwell is worth looking at.

Sorry chaps! I should have made it clear I'd been using smtp.orange.net

Thanks for confirming my results Freddy.

I can understand why they have changed their policy; how hard would it be to
buy a PAYG SIM for cash, open an Orange email account and then use their
network as a conduit for spam?

Thanks for the referral to Gradwell; have you had experience of their
service? They are just up the road from me too.

For now I'm using a local MTA; there's loads of them that run under Windows.
It seems to work fine, even for sending mail to Yahoo and Hotmail.

Yes - I find them very good.

One advantage for me is that if you have e-mail hosting with them your
IP is logged during a POP3 connection and kept for a couple of hours -
this can then be used as
authentication for smtp relay. Useful if your e-mail client does not
    have smtp-auth.
