Hi - would appreciate some expert advice. I bought a PayGo sim for O2
thinking I would be able to browse the web using GPRS - but can only use O2
Active and have been told I must have a monthly account for web access. Is
    that correct?
I am prepared to get a monthly account but only want to use the web
occasionally. Can I do this and only pay for the quantity downloaded without
having to buy one of their monthly pay bolt-ons?
I know I should ask O2 but they make it so difficult and/or expensive.
    TIA Doogan.

Yes, you can do that without any bolt-on with a pay-monthly o2 contract.

However, it's not the cheapest as far as I am aware! Open to correction
    of course!

You get an inclusive allowance with the monthly deals online,
www.o2.co.uk/shop - may be worth looking into.

When you say data is that the same as browsing the internet. If yes, would
you mind telling me exactly how you use Orange - thanks - Doogan.

Most of the time I use an old 7600 as a modem for my PDA and
occasionally my laptop. It's an ideal phone, nice an flat and sits in my
    briefcase with bluetooth switched on.

I'm lucky in that I have a Virgin OVP SIM which is 3g. I have also been
    using a PAYG Orange SIM.
