Blackberry 8700g or MDA Compact or Nokia N70

Blackberry 8700g or MDA Compact or Nokia N70


I'm after a phone that I can use for webbrosing with the T-Mobile Web'n'walk
unlimited tariff, which one of the above phones would be better for this??
or is there a better one out there??? Any advice would be appreciated.

Which one would be best for additional software etc.

I would definitely recommend a Windows Mobile phone ie MDA Compact,
Vario or Pro - loads of extra software for these.

I have the SPV M500, which I have now unlocked to take a T-Mobile sim
on Web'n'Walk 400, hence I have a brand new MDA Compact II Graphite
which came with the sim for sale if you want to make me an offer.

However, if you can put up with the sheer bulkiness of the MDA Pro,
that should be a lot faster for surfing as it's 3g (there is no mda
compact sized 3g device as yet).

Unfortunately even though T-Mobile do indeed sell the MDA Pro, which is
a 3g phone. they still have no 3g usims to put in it yet!

One of the mobile forums has suggested that you don't need a USIM to use
3G on T-mobile. No idea if its true, though I'll be finding out in the
not too distant future.

No you don't - current SIM give 3g access :-)

I have an MDA Vario (great piece of kit) - had an N70 sent as upgrade
for 3g access - absolute tosh incomparison with Vario - so sent it
back. Just got MDA Pro as an interim 3g device till the 3g enabled
vario form factor device is available.

So you reckon the Vario is the badgers nadgers? Any problems?

I'm looking for a new smartphone to replace my Treo 650 on Orange, but
currently they're a bit thin on the ground with O. Was considering a
Vario and unlocking it.

They're a bit bulky, and I have seen complaints of the stylus holder
becoming loose. The supplied case can cause the screen to rotate
inadvertantly due to the magnetic clasp, and some software isn't WM5
compatible. The phone itself is a joy to use though not without its own
quirks. I like mine (XDA Mini S variant) and still can't see anything else
on the market to rival it, or that appeals to me more.

Pop into a shop and try one.

I have one of those, don't know what type of SIM (starts 060071) it's got in
it, but it's sitting here in N17 with a 3G UTMS signal ("U" on the display,
when it goes out of 3G coverage and drops back to 2.5G this changes to a
"G"). So it's either got a USIM in it or T-Muppet's 3G service doesn't
require USIMs...

Thanks for that - you know more about it than either the T-Mobile shop
staff I spoke to or T-Mobile direct - they all tell me, yes I can buy a
3g UTMS phone from T-Mobile, but it will only operate at non 3g speeds!

Before I fork out on the MDA Pro, how much faster have you found 3g for
surfing, is it similar to the difference between say 56k dialup and
..5meg broadband?

As to speed, I just tried a (very) un-scientific experiment. First I set up
a UTMS connection to the T-Muppet favourites page, that took about 7
seconds. Then I entered the word "wombat" into Google on the MDA, from
pressing enter the page took just less than 8 seconds to load. On the
results page I tapped the wikipedia entry for "wombat", from tapping to
loading the page without images took less than 18 seconds. I then reloaded
the page with pictures enabled and that took about 25 seconds. In contrast,
using IE on my PC at home on a 30mb Telewurst line, Google took less than 4
seconds to load the results page and about 11 seconds to load the wikipedia
page. As far as I know, the word "wombat" has never been entered into Google
previously on either the MDA or my PC and likewise I have never previously
felt the need to see what wikipedia has to say on the subject of wombats.
When my partner gets home this evening, I'll repeat the experiment on her
MDA Compact II to see what the 2.5 times are like...

I think its an excellent phone. If you can live with only GPRS and no
Video calling its the one to have.
