#1 | | Guest | I'm considering selling my Nokia 7600 on eBay (ex contract, current locked
to 3), but I notice that on eBay some phones went for 'silly money' (£200+)
with the buyer having, guess what, zero feedback. Quite a lot of the winning
bids on items at 'sensible prices' were from buyers with zero feedback. I'm
guessing a high proportion of these are going to cause the seller some
problems.
I use eBay, but only from time to time to buy/sell videogames, and haven't
seen this sort of issue. Am I right in thinking there are problems in
selling phones on eBay that are worse than the 'usual' issue of an
occasional rogue buyer/seller. If so, why do phones attract this sort of
problem?
Are there any other issues to watch out for? (and ways to avoid them - other
than saying in big letters "Do Not bid if you have zero feedback as I won't
sell you the phone")
Thanks

I wouldn't bother. They're not actually worth enough to make it
worthwhile.

Sell it with 'Instant payment required' switched on. Sold 2 mobiles through
ebay, and both sold without any hassle.

Say you'll ship to UK only
Say you want payment up front (or put buy it now)
Say you want >10 feedback
Nost issues with phones on ebay are to do with buying and not selling
phones.
Just don't fall for a scam by sending to Nigeria etc ...

Exactly. Best to stick to UK only. You'll still get emails from
Indonesia etc. offerering some fantasic amount of money if you sell
direct. May I STRONGLY advise you, that if you use Paypal, to wait at
least one day after Paypal confirm any credit card transactions. If
the credit card is fraudualant just try getting Paypal to take
responsibility. They are quite happy to confirm the transaction has
gone through, let you send the goods, and then recoup the monies from
you account if the credit card transaction doesn't work out - I know
they did it with me. Overall I lost £136 because of Paypal.

*NONE* of these will prevent eBay's automated systems from selling your phone
to a fictitious bidder! It has happened to me!
You then have to use eBay's "Non paying bidder" single relisting credit.
The *ONLY* effective eBay options are "UK Only" (but most fictious users are
UK!) and, by far the best (if costly!) "do not sell unless buyer completes
PayPal purchasing"
What they need is a "don't sell to a very newly created username with zero
feedback" option! | | | |

Buy it now with immediate payment required, sub 10 feedback email you
to confirm bid or will cancel, and only ship to confirmed Paypal
address of payee by special delivery so its signed for and insured.
Took me 3 attempts to sell a phone last time, first bin stomped, second
zero feedback unconfirmed address appeared to be in middle of
industrial estate, third one real buyer with instant payment and
confirmed address.

Many thanks - some very helpful & enlightening stuff (now I know why people
say that 'Paypal just took my money')

#11 | | Guest | I'd add that it's best to avoid Paypal altogether. I've sold lots of
moby's on eBay and accept cheque or postal order only and haven't had
any problems. If you get an offer from someone who looks like a muppet,
you can always cancel the bid. Check out http://www.paypalsucks.com for
more details as to why PayPal should be avoided.

That his the nail on the head, although would be a clear admission of ebay
accepting they have a scammers problem!!
easiest option would be for ebay to require card confirmation details before
allowing an account to be used, i.e. ensures users are verified... but that
would be too much work for ebay....
usual rule to have for ebay whether buying on ebay is if it looks to good a
deal (buying cheap or getting loads for crap)... chances are it is a con!

You cannot use "Buy it now" (at all!!) as an option in this case!
If an item has a "buy it now" price the spammers just create an account
and pretend to buy the item at that price!

I've sold two 7600s on eBay before without a problem but as a seller you
really are a bit an the mercy of whoever's bidding - I think I've just
been lucky to have decent buyers!
As a side issue - do you know that you can unlock the 7600 for free via
codes entered on the phone? Visit http://www.trycktill.com/eng/unlock_swe.asp then switch to English and
pop in the make/model.
I did it on both the 7600s I sold and it probably adds a few quid to the
price.
Cheers

Don't be tempted to sell off ebay, when i sold my 7600 on ebay i got
several so called buyers saying they wanted it for a birthday present, etc.
and to sell it to them direct, checking their email IP showed them to be
foreign
although claiming to be in the UK with a UK mailing address.
Scammers offer either to pay by western union or with a personal UK cheque
accept neither, WU is hoplessly insecure, and UK cheques are stolen/fakes
