Transferring contacts to new 3G Phone

I want to transfer my contacts from a sony ericsson to a 3G Motorola
C975 mobile phone, but when I put in the SIM I am prompted for a
subsidy password.

Is there no way to transfer my contacts without unlocking the phone?

Would one of those cheap keyring sim backup devices work? I can buy one for
a couple of quid. Is it worth a go?

Do your two phones have either Bluetooth or Infared? If so, on the Sony
Ericsson do, Phonebook, Options, Advanced, Send all contacts and pick the
approreate method.
