Just got my umpteenth new Nokia and I have been advised to charge it for
16 hours, just like the old days. Is this really necessary with modern
battery technology, or has it just become an urban legend?

The first few times (3 or 4), yes it should be done. Also, let the battery
run down until you get the low battery warning once every few weeks.

Explain why a lithium-ion battery needs to be conditioned in that way, and
why it is necessary to run it down every few weeks.

Running down Lithium-Ion batteries is bad for them.
They should be charged frequently, and while there's still half a charge
unless it can be avoided. If a battery will be left unused for a while,
it should be discharged to around 40-50% and stored in a cool place.
Charging to 100% isn't necessary to prolong life as it was with Nicad
and (less so) NiMH batteries, they don't suffer 'memory effect'.

YES! Unless you are old Like Ivor and know nothing about anything, unless it
has 8mm and betamax in there somewhere.

Formation (deposition of the semi-insulating layer on the anode) is only
partially complete when LiIon batteries are shipped. If the battery
discharges fully during storage, this layer decomposes even further.
It is replenished during the first few charge-discharge cycles;
that is why it is said that LiIon batteries to not display maximum
capacity until they have been used a few times.

Nothing wrong with Betamax. It got forced out through sheer stupidity
(plus some clever marketing by the VHS types..!)
How old do you think I am..? What's wrong with being old anyway..?! You
will be too one day, unless somebody kills you first..!

You sound like Jose Mourinho, can't admit the better side just won!

Mid fifties.

You end up knowing nothing about current technology. Like new phone
batteries and VCR programming.

WOO HOO rather be shot than become a doddering old git.

You're young aren't you?
Because if you were of more mature years, you'd know all about Betamax
and it's superiority over VHS. I won't bring Video2000 into this debate
;-)

Technically, Betamax is far better than VHS. Read the specs.

Wrong.

I know all I need to know, thanks..!

You sound like a teenager: you don't remember the facts.
Betamax was technically better than VHS - OK, not a lot better (that
was U-Matic) but move prerecorded stuff was available in VHS -
particularly porn, I'm told - and so the popular pushed out the
better.
Off-hand, I don't recall any aspect of VHS that was superior to
Betamax, but I didn't have much interest - the only video format I had
use of was U-Matic.

And as a result I have to deal with the ghastly aspect of looking after
80-odd VHS CCTV recorders at work..! We have more duff ones than working
ones sometimes..! They're slowly moving us onto digital HDD-based systems,
but *very* slowly :-(

Specs is not everything in the overal supeiority of a product. Support is
also key. Look at a Playstation2 vs Xbox. On paper Xbox should of been
better. It wasn't. Why? SUPPORT. Same applies to betamax vs VHS. Wasn't
Minidisc supposed to be far more versatile than CD too? Theres a pattern in
here!
