I'm being plagued by foreign-originated (Indian sub continent) sales calls
to my mobile number. I don't know how they got hold of it but it's very
annoying. The calls are from withheld or unidentified numbers - I asked
Virgin Mobile if they can reject such calls automatically as a user option
but they can't. The only way is to programme one's phone to divert withheld
numbers straight to voicemail without ringing.
I just wondered whether my phone can do this - it's an SPV C500. I can't
find such an option.
If it can't, does anyone know of a business type phone which can?
PS Yes, I am registered with the TPS but this doesn't seem to concern
companies based abroad.

If you know you voice mailbox number you can switch it on by entering
**21*<mailbox number>#
It will be there in the menu though, just keep digging. Also dial your
voivemail and set to to notify you by SMS when you have a message, not
to ring and tell you.

Try using software to do the trick ... either
NovoSec's SmartFilter @
http://www.smartphone.net/software_detail.asp?id=409 or
FilterOne @ http://www.smartphone.net/software_detail.asp?id=1407
I personally use the NovoSec one - works a treat !

Hi, thanks for the advice. As i know the voice mail number I tried your
sequence but it didn't work. Once I pressed the send key I got 'waiting'
then 'failed'.
I'll explore my menu system again

There's very little that you can do about this problem other than finding a
phone that can provide the function.
There has been debate - for many years - about whether or not mobile phone
companies are legally obliged to provide an anonymous caller rejection
service. Landline companies are (NTL does for free whilst BT charges,
outrageously, £10 a quarter). The consensus seems to be that there is a
legal obligation on mobile phone companies to provide the service but the
obligation is not enforced and there seems to be little if any inclination
to enforece it.

I see. I didn't realise that and I was puzzled because, as you say, landline
companies do have such a facility. My company Telewest charges £1.50 a
month.
I'll investigate the later models of the C500 and see if they offer the
'anonymous caller rejection' option. It would also be useful to be able to
programme the phone to reject those bogus ID numbers that some spammers use.
I got one yesterday: 0212345. Most seem to begin with 07 though in order to
trick you that it's from a UK mobile.

It's not a great solution but...
If you set all known phone numbers, stored in your phonebook, to use
particular ring tone(s) and leave the rest to use a blank ringtone
(no sound) then they will get shuffled off to the answering service
without you knowing. Put another way the default is a silent ringtone
but all those in your phonebook have a non-silent ringtone allocated
to them.
Certainly possible on Nokias where numbers in the phonebook can be set
to belong to specific groups. A group ringtone is configurable.

Those 07 personal numbers can cost you up to £2 per call just for the
connection charge!
