Phone broke

I bought a new phone just over a month ago. I decided not to get
insurance. Since yesterday it is displaying the message "Insert SIM"
even though there is a SIM inside. Without insurance am I able to get
this replaced/repaired at no cost to me?

Yes!

Take it to the place you bought it, they'll send it away to manufacturer or
a repair centre and must mend for free.

You may be without a phone in the meantime though ... unless you can borrow
one

Are you sure it's not the SIM which has died? Worth checking before
sending away etc.

Check out the amended sale of goods act - items which fail within the
first 6 months are classed as being faulty from new unless the vendor
can prove differently.

I would have thought that they are obliged to swap the phone in the shop (if
it's the phone and not the sim) under the SOG act as it's not fit for
purpose anyway having failed within a month.
