After 3 months wrestling with an NEC mobile I gave up and bought a
Nokia 1100. Which is relatively simple for an idiot like me to use BUT
I can't for the life of me get it to take voicemail messages when it's
engaged, switched off etc.
I can't recall what I did now but it asked me for my mailbox number
when I was setting it up. I simply punched in 901 (which is what I dial
to retrieve my messages - I'm on O2). Alas it doesn't work.
Anyone help please?

just call 1750 from you mobile. This will activate your voicemail.
1760 will switch it off again

You need to use the full vociemailbox number, or I think you can also
dial a number like 1750 to activate voicemail properly and 1751 to turn
it off. Not sure of those number mind you.

Thanks! I now have a phone I can actually understand how to use!

There is a separate voicemail number per phone, issued for use from
abroad. This would be the number that you were asked to enter. But even
in some countries you can use 901. But for normal use at home, it
sounds like you're on top of it now.

Some years ago I had a Motorola and it went back because I had so much
trouble with it.
Now I will only have a Nokia phone (currently a 3510i) and it just does what
it is intended to do quietly (or loudly!).
