what you do once connected.

3G phone would give you a faster connection, you would need either a
datacable or bluetooth on the laptop and phone. Bluetooth would be
better in this scenario I think.

3G, anything up to 128kbps, on ordinary network anything up to
43.2kbps. These are downlink speeds, uplink is significantly slower,
usually about 25% of downlink.
