I am totally naive about GPS, but I could definitely use it. What is
the cheapest way to get GPS via a mobile phone? (I.e., the cost of the
actual phone, and the cost of the service)
Thank you for any recommendations.

Steal it! ;-)
You'll need a phone which can run GPS applications, ones running Symbian
(usually Nokia) or Windows Mobile will usually (but not always) do the
trick. Bluetooth is essential. Then get a GPS receiver from ebay. Then you
need some software, there are various free utilities but the quality is
variable.
Overall if you are wanting a *good* system then it's worthwhile paying for
it.

Or get Motorola a780 on a contract from The Link (includes software and
also has GPS receiver in flip of the phone!).

If i were you i would buy this:
http://www.woolworths.co.uk/ww_p2/pr...l?pid=50502165
or if money is a bit tight buy this:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...48005&doy=10m5
The i2 is black and white where the i3 is colour. I use to use my mobile for
sat nav but at these low prices for stand alone models why bother?
Bob.

Thank you for the lead. What I really need, though, is something that
gives a grid reference, so that it would be useful when sailing or
when driving accross a desert.

Grid reference, or lattitude and longditude? They are two very different
things.
