Orange N80 and data

I got a new SIM when I got my N80 from Orange (the SIM I was using in
my N70 was apparently not good enough). I notice that as soon as I
turn my phone on it makes a data connection (i.e. the double arrows go
from dotted to full). Only a few packets are exchanged but the
connection stays up. This never happened with my old SIM or the N70.
I tried the new SIM in the old N70 and now that tries to set up a
connection, so it seems that it's related to the new SIM. I spoke to
Orange CS, who seemed puzzled, so I was wondering if anybody else was
experiencing this.

It wouldn't necessarily be a problem but for a trip to Germany earlier
in the week. Every time the phone connected to a network it would try
to set up the data connection and every time I'd get the message "SIM
registration failed". I'm still waiting for Orange technical support
to get back to me on this one...

Any ideas?

Got mine two days ago (N80), and yes it does the same thing. Hadn't really
taken much notice until you mentioned it though.

SIM Card Registration Failed means that you have been denied access to
the network. If you were abroad at the time I would lay odds that you
don't have roaming activated on your account.

Re: Orange N80 and data

Thanks for the replies. I have roaming activated. It just seemed to
be a problem when roaming with T Mobile. If I set the phone to manual
roaming, I could choose, say, E Plus. Once registered, the phone would
set up the data connection like I've described, and then work OK (until
I went out of coverage when I'd have to choose a network all over
again). If the phone was set to automatic, it would go to T Mobile by
default, the phone would register and as soon as the data connection
was established the phone would disconnect with a SIM registration
error. This does seem to be an Orange-TMobile Germany (and perhaps
even my SIM) problem, as it did the same thing when I put the SIM into
my N70 - but I was just wondering if anybody else had been suffering
from it.

I've taken a look at a colleague's Vodafone N80, and his doesn't set up
the connection. So maybe it's something that Orange have bundled with
their phone. The only thing I can find is their Orange Photography
application, but why this would set up a pre-emptive connection is
beyond me.

Apart from that the phone appears to be fine, if you excuse the fairly
regular low memory warning, even when there is over 20MB of memory
free. A reboot usually solves the problem and in this sense it's just
like the N70. One thing, though - there's that useful application to
transfer data between two Nokia Symbian phones. I thought I'd use it
to transfer the photos from my N70 to the N80, but it doesn't transfer
the album information, so you end up with a collection of jumbled up
photos. Has anyone found a way around this to avoid hours of finger
work?

Re: Orange N80 and data

You could go to your galltery and Mark all then send all via bluetooth
to your n80?

Just to let you know, ive been having the same data problems with my
new Orange N80.

Every time i turn mine on it makes a data connection to orangeinternet
and transfers a few bytes (not kb), i've just spoken to a nice woman at
orange who has notified the technical dept, I've also told her that it
looks like it's happening with all Orange N80's as per the feedback on
the group.

I did a hard reset last night to see if it was some pre installed app
that was doing it but after the reset it still made a data connection.

The sooner I can get the phone debranded the better!

I thought, like others on the forum, that it was because of the Orange
Photography application, but I've disabled that and it still makes the
connection.

Is anybody else having problems with their N80 rebooting, say 3 or 4
times a day? Now I know that Nokia Symbian phones aren't the most
stable of devices, especially when they first come out, but this is
something else. Browsing the web is one sure way to get it to reboot,
so is spending too long looking at photos in Gallery. This morning I
turned the phone on, took a photo and then tried to look at it - and
was greeted with an "Out of memory" message! It had only been on 60
seconds and there was 30MB free on the phone. I called Orange CS about
the rebooting problem last night and the rep said that Nokia had
advised them that the N80 would be expected to reboot regularly in
order to avoid lock-ups. How's that for quality? He also said that
Orange were already taking names of troubled N80 owners so that they
can contact them when the first firmware update becomes available...

Re: Orange N80 and data

Hi,

I've also disabled the Photography software, it's not that causing the
data connection. I've been getting out of memory (load up Snake, go to
the menu, try to type an SMS and I'm out!)

I've had a few reboots, mainly when browsing the web over my WLAN,
though it appears to not want to find my WLAN even after a reboot.

I wouldn't expect a reasonable answer out of Orange CS, I reckon we're
just going to get standard made up excuses until some new firmware is
released by Nokia. I have to say I'm at least happy it hasn't been
'bastardised' completely by Orange, the thing being the photography
store (do they not realise Nokia make a program called Lifeblog!) and a
screensaver, all of which can be disabled.

On the subject of Nokia Lifeblog 2.0 (I used 1.0 thru 1.7 for my
7610/6680), has anyone managed to get a registration code from
www.nokia.com/nseries/lifeblog ? It won't take my serial number.
Saying that the new version has imported everything from the old one
and hasn't actually asked for a Reg. code.

david.

I wonder if you could try deleting some settings on the access point
setup, so that when it tried to connect it might report something like
"application x is trying to connect"? Maybe that would reveal the
culprit.

That's interesting. Might stop the un-initiated from cocking their
machines up I suppose, but seems a bit restrictive. I wonder if it's
possible to change the default access point?
