We have two old Phillips C12's we use as PAYG on O2 for emergencies/car
breakdowns etc.but have just heard O2 will turn off all C12's on June 30th
    06. Is it possible to get a PAYG sim card from a different service provider
and would that work with the C12's (they do use the small sim cards not the
    credit card sized ones)

Is there perhaps a better solution that we are missing?

    Thanks

The C12 used phone controlled billing, which meant they were wide open
to fraudulent activity. This is the main reason O2 are switching off
service for these old phones. You can't use another SIM in that phone as
the SIM and phone are tied together as a pair - one is useless without
    the other.

I read that if you take your old phones into an O2 shop they would give
    you a free phone upgrade.

O2 have sent messages to all of these customers over the last few months
advising of the switch-off and quoting an 0800 number to call to discuss
    alternatives.

My mother in law did this and got an NEC 313 phone for free with the
    same number and same tariff.

For some inexplicable reason this topic was covered on BBC2's "working
lunch" programme on friday. (ISTM using your mobile is the exact opposite
of working :-) It should be available to watch on the beeb's website.
They did mention the solutions that O2 are offering.

Not true, you can use another Sim in the C12, but not the other way around,
being an old monobander it's not worth bothering with, use them for trade
    in,
I think O2 will offer a favorable upgrade for them, keeping the old numbers.

An elderly relative got given a new free SIM and quite a decent nokia for
free. If you don't ask, you don't get!

BBC2's 'Working Lunch' programme detailed how o2 were charging some
customers £5 for a new SIM, but were giving a £5 discount on a new handset
if you spent a certain amount per month. (I didn't pay much attention, but I
    *think* that was the gist...).

In fact if you spent over £50 a month on the handset previously you would
get a £10, or a £1/£5 discount otherwise. Pretty rubbish really, so I'd
suggest saying your friends have received free phone and SIM-card, and see
    where it takes you.

I have not been notified by O2 about the C12/13 cut off. ;-(

So looked at their web page and could find no information about it.

Can anyone help with the 0800 number to call as their customer care at
20p minute does not have a 'We are about to cut your phone off option'
and I just ended up going around the menu system.

    Many thanks,
    Mike

If they are turning off the c12 and c13 why not the c14? ....c13 is dual
    band like the c14......

I have been wondering about the c13.
Were some of the Philips on "U tariff" (or whatever it was called)
    c13s, not c12s?
I have a c13 which works perfectly well with new O2 SIMS.
Surely it is only those which store the balance on the 'phone that are
    to be turned off.
A simple test for this would be to send *#10#:
if it gives a balance, then the phone is not affected. if it gives
    "Not allowed" it is.
(I exclude those on contract tariffs.)

I have a Diga that has now been "terminated" and its balance
transferred to another number I have. It has taken O2 weeks to do
    this.

Because Cellnet PAYT phones up to some of the C13 had the call credit in the
    phone not the network

O2 are finally ditching the old hacked credit system
    Nothing to do with bands

All other UK PAYT networks had the call credit in the network from the
    begining

Re: O2 Phillips Turn Off Help!

After speaking to O2 this morning it appears that not all PAYG Phillips
C12/13, or Motorola M3588 models are affected by the cut off.

The only way to be sure if your phone is ok to use after 30th June is to
call O2 and get a confirmation from them.

Its more that certain PAYG packages are to be cut off, rather than a
    phone type.
Just a pity there is no information about this on the O2 web sight, at
least none that a site search could find.
