ROFL. It takes a muppet to not spot dodgy notes. It is very very very rare
to spot a fake that is even worth a second glance.

Whenever someone hands a note to you, turn the note right way up, so bank of
england is on top, run your finger and thumb along the top over the bank of
england, it should feel raised, almost like a layer of wax. The newer the
note, the greater the raised amount.

If it is flat, and a slightly older note, it doesnt mean it is fake, as they
can wear down, you can check the usual, such as watermark etc.

But, if the notes appear new, and the bank of england is smooth, then the
    notes are fake.

You can check hundreds of pounds quite quickly without giving the appearance
you are checking them using this technique, get into the habit.

It is something i have always done. When in my distance past i worked as a
cashier, I would put several thousands of pounds of cash through my hands
every shift. I spotted many fakes but didnt accept a single one.

While I can't disagree with what you've writte, it's much easier to
only take fivers - fewer fivers are counterfieted - hence a smaller
chance of being stuffed by a handful of them.

No problem taking Paypal (scumpal), but make sure you send it
recorded/insured and take the money out of Scumpal straight away.

You could take the phone to a local "agent" (or whatever Ebay calls
them) and ask them to sell it for you (they charge a commission).
Probably be worth it for a Clueless Clive like yourself.

Yes they can, if the cheque is reported stolen.

PayPal could still do a chargeback on the amount.. So you either end up
owing them money (which granted, you need never pay I suppose) or
they'll just take it off whatever credit/debit card you have registered
    with them.

It's likely about a months pay for the postie that could've nicked it.

Well that's another thread altogether Sure bank transfers can take a
few days, but if you're talking time to physically get your hands on the
cash they're quicker than both PayPal and cheques. If they bank at the
same place as you, they should be instantaneous.

But speed aside, I believe bank transfers are the safest way of doing
things if you want to make sure you hold onto your money.

I don't think they are able to debit your registered card without your
    permission.

I'm pretty sure you give them that permission when you sign up with
them. It'll be in their T&C's likely, perhaps someone can confirm who
    knows about these things?

    Safest for the seller, certainly.
But bank transfer only could well deter buyers, as it also means that
if there is a problem or the seller isn't legit, there is no mechanism
for them to get some/all of their money back.
