No question that you are one. He was proved correct: they arrived
safely, as had every letter he had ever sent in a similar envelope.

I suspect that the essential difference is that he's smarter than you.
He suspected that RD packages were being targeted by dodgy posties,
    but ordinary post wasn't.

Fair comment, but clicking the T and C is a lot different to actually
    signing something.
Methinks that if you complained to your CC company, they'd refund you.

Yup, I'm pretty sure they would do too.

However your PayPal days would likely be numbered! I suppose it depends
on how much you value the service and whether or not you'd want to use
it in the future (or at least in your own name anyway)

When I had a problem with goods not arriving, I figured I'd trust
PayPal's way of doing things first.. Then complain to my CC company if
they didn't refund me. Luckily they did, which showed me PayPal are very
much on the buyers side when using their site. YMMV etc etc.

Yup, but that's what we're talking about here

I would rarely PAY with bank transfer, for buying I'd always use PayPal.
If sellers don't offer it I usually go elsewhere even if it means paying
extra, I'm too lazy to faff around with other methods of payment.

They are ONLY on the buyers side, that's why they call it the the
    "sellers protection scheme" LOL.

Fair comment about dodgy posties, but as you said, 800 quid is/was a lot
of money. I still say you gotta be toss-potty not to insure it.
