magnetic wireless communications

Hi All
This is a serious subject in view of the report yesterday on
communications, underground to surface.Who remembers a Tommorrows World
program about 30yrs ago with James Burk demonstrating a magnetic device
communicating about a mile underground at a coal mine, base to surface. The
magnetic effect was not affected by the layer of rock between the guy on the
surface and the chap underground.I remember being most impressed by this new
device heralding a new era of safety in deep mines,Whatever happened to
it.Perhaps James Burk or Raymond Baxter remembers it.

Re: magnetic wireless communications

Hi Ian
I read the interesting links but the radios do not use magnetism
specifically ,and I`m sure this device did.

I can remember vaguely such a device being mentioned. Perhaps the
description has the standard "pop sci" over simplification.

[Cue picture of Alexei Sayle suspended over a bottle of "Daddies
Sauce"].

The one I saw was a bit later than that though don't think I saw TW when
they were presenting it.

'Mole phone'

He said the servicemen were in touch with a surface team by a land telephone
cable which they would have laid out behind them as they made their way
through the subterranean complex.

They also had a special "mole phone" which worked like a mobile phone but
uses magnetic currents in the ground to transmit a signal.

That's what you need, the new 'Mole' tariff from Orange! :-)
