    http://www.ukphoneinfo.com/section/h...oduction.shtml
will show you the originating network but you will not know if the
number has been ported between networks.

Ofcom lists what network the number prefix was originally assigned to
but if the number is ported you are screwed.

There is no public website showing the network a given mobile number is
    now on.

Sorry but none of th eabove are conclusive due to porting
    possibilities.
    This is conclusive:-
If you have a Nokia, for example,
    go to Settings/phone/operator selection/manual
or whatever is your phone's equivalent.
Assuming you don't have a 'roaming in the UK' agreement, try to
register with one of the networks. It will refuse to register with all
except your own network ('3' could be the exception).
If you ar on BT mobile you are on Vodafone. If on Virgin then you are
on T-Mobile. Easymobile is T-Mobile too afaik.
Another way to tell if you are on Vodafone, on my phone at least, is
to switch on the facility to see the telephone area code you are
    currently lnked to.
In summary: If you don't not have a roaming agreement then try to
register your phone to networks manually - if you suceed that will be
    your network.

    From that site:

No good - I said "is now on".

There is a database, used by the mobile networks which shows up to date
allocation and porting, but it is not available to the public.

Damn, I've always thought it was where the number was now.

There isn't, you know. There are several databases, and it's all a bit
    of a kludge.

More up-to-date probably, but are you suggesting that ukphoneinfo.com
is either not free or not public?

    BTW, http://www.ukphoneinfo.com/section/tci/locator.shtml takes you to
    the lookup page directly.

But it doesn't give you the details of *ported* numbers - just the
original network the number was on.

I just did a check on it and got:

"Oftel records show that numbers starting 0781x 0 are allocated to
Orange. Note that due to number portability if an individual number has
moved to a different operator this information is not publically available."

This number is no longer on Orange, and as they say, the porting data is
    not publically available.
