I've intermittently suffered incoming 'data calls' on my 6310i for
years. (unusual ring - different to the one set in phone options,
can't answer it - gives 'connect terminal' message if i press 'green')
Last weekend i was woken up on both saturday and sunday morning by
calls which, unlike when this had happened before, showed up a mobile
number as caller id. (iirc previously the caller id number had been
    unobtainable).

I rang the owner of that number who said he was trying to make a normal
voice call to a completely different number. Both of us are on orange.

Orange CS basically hung up on me when i called this in (promised me a
call back which of course never came).

    Any suggestions/explanations/similar experiences?

Cancel incoming data on your line, or bar them using the phones menu
    system.

If someone calls your data number, Orange assumes that it is a data
call (even if it isn't). That's why a voice call is presented as a
    data call.

Why someone is getting a wrong number is something else entirely: no
    idea why that might be.

i can't find any way of barring data calls from the phone menu (6310i).
presumably the other needs a call to Orange?

You could do it by calling orange, or by using the standard GSM codes
(google for these). The default barring password for Orange is 1111.

No-one will know it except for Orange. Ring 156 and ask them to tell you
what it is if you really want to know.

Hi, I get this quite a lot, but in my case I know what my data number
    is.

AIUI a number for incoming data or fax calls is allocated to your
phone if/when you ask for your phone to be fax or data enabled. You
have to be informed of this number otherwise you cannot tell your
callers how to send you a fax to your mobile.

I set my phone up to give a different ring for fax or data calls, but
sometimes it will ring when I'm not expecting a fax, and my PDA cannot
pick up the fax, neither can I answer the call as if it were voice.
It seems this is what happens if someone is dialing your fax number
for a voice call by mistake.

For the OP, contact your customer services, and ask them if your phone
is fax enabled, and if it is, what is your fax number. If you don't
need data or fax, ask then to disable it, I'm sure they should be able
    to.
