I spent about 3 weeks asking Virgin to do this, and they always
promised to and never did. I'd like at least 10 rings.
In the end I gave in and turned voicemail off. If someone wants to
talk to me they can ring again.

I hate voicemail, don't have it on any of my phones (mobile or other), and
avoid calling people who have it.
30 seconds is the maximum, not enough time to pull over and answer, take it
out of you pocket or find it.
As I didn't want to annoy my callers I disabled voicemail straight away on
my mobiles, I do have a number just for people to leave messages on, if for
some unusual reason they can't reach me.

It's never been a problem for me. If I'm driving the phone is in a car kit
with auto-answer, if I'm walking it's in my pocket and easy enough to fish
out.

I wouldn't mind if it was quicker, but when it says "welcome to the 02
answer phone bla bla bla, to edit your message press 1 at the end bla
bla have a nice day" - just get on it with it and say "leave a voicemail"

Actually I didn't say that, you're quoting my name with another poster,
please snip correctly.

I agree, but they have to get their money somehow, keeping callers hanging
on is one way to do it I reckon.

Oh God, it's the "I hate voicemail so everyone else should" brigade out
again. Wondered when you'd crawl out of the woodwork!
Voicemail works. Lots of people use it. 99% of people who call me leave me a
message, and most of the time it costs them nothing as they are calling from
their mobile anyway. It winds me up when they don't have voicemail. So much
so, that I actually leave a message on their voicemail by calling it
directly, so they have no choice!

Costs them nothing from their mobile..? That's a good tariff. I have to
pay for my mobile calls.

But if you have inclusive minutes you can hang up pretty quickly. It's
a bummer for PAYT and LL users though, especially with the 5p - 10p
minimum charge.

Wouldn't touch contract now, my usage doesn't warrant it any more.
