Phone insurance: Is it worth it?

Just started a £30 a month contract with Orange. Was thinking of taking out
Orange Care (£5 a month). Is it worth it or can I just use my home contents
insurance which has cover for personal possessions?

Thanks,

Tim

my House Cover was sufficient.........check with yours first.

I had a water damaged W800i replaced under Home Care.

I had to fax them over the SE repair centre's letter stating the phone was
U/S and they sent me out a new phone that day.

No, check with your home contents insurer first - whilst all insurance
companies generally find a way to disallow claims, Orange Care is worse
than most going by the reports on here. On top of the premium
(£60/year) there is also a charge of £15/claim. So even if you aren't
covered under your home insurance, a £20-50 PAYG phone to use as a
replacement sounds like a better option (if you're not insured then
Orange will charge you £17.50 for a replacement contract SIM card if
required).

No insurance is worth it.

No, Yes.

Insurance is for things you could not afford to lose. You wouldn't
insure a carrier bag, because if anything happened to it, you'd just
get another.

You would insure your home, because getting another of them might cost
more than you can afford this year.

A mobile phone is unlikely to cost more than a hundred pounds or so to
replace, (nearer a carrier bag than a house in value) so most people
would be best taking the risk of having to replace it if the worst
happened.

The premiums for mobile insurance are sky high, because people "lose"
mobiles to get a free upgrade to a new model.

Unless you are a swindler or very careless and/or unlucky, mobile
phone insurance is a waste of money. Having said that, your house
contents insurance probably does cover it, though the excess might be
more than the phone is worth.

Of course not. If it were, insurance companies would pay out more than
they received in premiums. Factor in commission to the seller and it
becomes even less worthwhile. Insurance is a waste of money if you can
stand the loss from your own resources - and with mobile phones and most
maintenance contracts, most people should be able to manage. When the
possible loss starts to increase most people start to prefer to share
the risk by using insurance companies.

In an extreme case, I /believe/ it's even possible to insure yourself
for 3rd party risks when driving but I'm not certain if this is true or,
if so, how you'd go about proving it to the satisfaction of the law.

Does mobile phone insurance cover "losing" the phone as opposed to it being
"stolen" as I'm sure that I read in my policy it didn't ( without going looking
for it now) ..Is that usual .?..surely losing a phone is more likely than having
it nicked .?

I believe you have to deposit a large sum of money with the motor insurers
bureau, something in the region of several hundred thousand, but I believe
that has increased recently.

Yep. That's what the big fleet operators do, it's cheaper and easier
than insuring every vehicle/driver separately.

Which seems to me to demonstrate quite clearly that if you can stand the
loss, insurance is a waste of money - unless you're prepared to pay
someone to administer it for you.

The success of insurance businesses at the low level (mobile phones,
appliance warranties, etc.) seems to me to be further indication that
many have become pathologically risk-averse and lost any ability to
judge risk in terms of either the chance of any loss or its possible
size. Perhaps it also indicates an irresponsible attitude to taking care
of their own property.

As a rule of thumb, the harder an assistant tries to sell me such a
policy, the more I resist it.

Not really worth it for an individual when one compares the lost interest on
several hundred thousand with my TPF&T premium of £100.

Mine covers my phone if stolen from a car, but not from the boot!

I have a hatch-back, so technically the whole car is one unit, its all boot!

Had a phone for 8 years with no insurance (£480)

Had phone stolen once - £100
Smashed screen once - £50

So the way I see it I've saved £330 ....

Exactly ! With me its 11 yrs with, touch wood, no losses, so I've saved
£660

Its balancing the risk against the likeliehood and the potential loss.

With house insurance, the potential losses are such that you would have
to be a complete moron not to have house and contents cover regardless
of what the likeliehood might be of a claim. You try costing up
replacing everything in your house and it gets quite scary.

A mobile on the other hand, an annual preium of £60 plus excess etc
means you may as well just grit your teeth get a replacement SIM and
buy a new phone or buy a chepao phone off ebay until you take out a new
contract or upgrade if it's on a contract.

As posted there does seem to be a heavy weighting in phone premiums,
either because they get stolen so much or are 'lost' so that people can
get upgrades. With my credit card I can get free 2nd year warranty
extension and insurance for electrical items over £50 but not mobiles.
Probably because the insurers have had their fingers burnt.

With a bit of shopping around it is possible to get things like laptops
and mobile included although the insurer may impose a different excess
which may not make a claim for a phone worthwhile plus it could jack up
your premium overall.

Regards

No.

Bank the money (along with the money for the breakdown cover on the TV,
DVD, fridge freezer et al.) and if your household insurance doesn't cover
the
loss, the money you've banked will cover you, and you'll have the interest
to
boot.

Self insurance is the way to go.
100% no claims discount, Pays out instantly, with no form filling.
When was the last time _anybody_ got made redundant, lost your phone, and
had every major appliance breakdown all at the same time? (Or in the same
year?)
