I've reverted to using my old 6310i as a phone and currently have an
Orange PAYG sim in my M600 which is getting used just for data and the
    odd text.

Would I be better on another network? I seem to remember that i can
get unlimited GPRS on Orange for £1 a day but don't anticipate using
anything like £30 a month at the normal £4 per meg rate. I suspect
my use will be irregular as well so i'm not keen on anything that
    expires.

You can pay £4 for 4 megabytes but it does expire after a month.

Orange does offer GPRS for a day for £1 but there is a 25 meg cap.

That's pretty good i suppose - i'm probably paying £4 per meg at the
    moment.

Do none of the other operaters have a good Payg deal?

Orange are VERY good for PAYG data! You CAN combine the £4 for 4 Mb bundle
with the £1/day unlimited data just for those days when data use will be
    intensive.

    Re: Which PAYG for data?

Orange is currently the best bet for GPRS at a standard £3 Mb. As
posted you can get 4 Mb for a month for £4, if you know that you are
going to be using it a lot on a particular day then you can also buy
'unlimited' use for 1 day ending at midnight for £1.

Beware if you use this overseas though. Then you will be paying
something like £8 Mb. If you anticipate using it overseas, get a
Virgin SIM as their rate is fixed at £5 Mb in UK or abroad.

    Regards

So what's the easiest way of getting these deals onto my account? i'm
finding topping up via credit card by dialling 450 incredibly long
winded. Is there a really easy way to, say, get the unlimited data for
today or get a £4 bundle for this month?

If any of you would be keen on unlimited data, but don't like to be
stuck in a contract, T-Mobile do a "contract" (get out with a months
notice, not a years) for £15/month which has their webnwalk bundle,
with 50minutes each month. Sim only, and usual TWO GIGABYTE limit
    per month applies.

For those who like their data, it's brilliant. Plus I can ditch it
when the Hermes is released to get it fully subsidised over a year.

To get the £1/day unlimited option you just dial 450 and follow the automated
menu system - there is no need to speak to anyone. I presume that the
monthly bundle works the same (but I have not used it).

I've only used 450 twice so far but i'm convinced it's engineered to
encourage you to switch to a monthly contract - it must take about 10
minutes to put a £10 top up on by the time i've keyed in the digits
from my card, the back of my card, my postcode and house number. Oh,
and my pin. Not very convenient when i'm just trying to quickly
    check my emails!

I thought that you could "register" a credit card and, once that was done,
topups were then trivial! Certainly buying a £1/day GPRS "extra" is trivial
as long as there is sufficient credit on the account!

i have done - last 4 digits of the card i think, security code, numbers
from postcode, house number. all repeated back to you with another
    press to confirm.

How is the cost debited from Virgin PAYG? At the end of each call?
When would the debit show in the available balance? Do they have a
place to see usage by kbyte?

Since when? There wasn't one when I used it less than 2 weeks ago. It did
regularly dump my connection but I was able to reconnect and continue.

This looks like it refers to new 3G version mentioned at:

    3a>

Notice that it is only until 31st August and the T&Cs bear a remarkable
resemblance to the T-mobile ones apart from the 25Mb cap.

    Steve.
