Best MMC card / spec / size for 6230 please?

Hi All,

A mate gave me his old 6230 the other day because he felt sorry for me
with my 3510. However the 3510 does everything I need (it rings, I
answer, talk etc <g>) so my daughter has nicked it as her SE T610
seems to have gone a bit weird (she's nicked the 6230 off me in spite
of not liking Nokias <g>)?

Anyway, I know she likes playing bluetooth / mp3 etc and I wondered
what would be the 'safest bet' re a larger card than the 64M one
that's in there at the moment please? (ie, most likely to work because
the technology is more compatible etc).

I have used 7dayshop with good results in the past (digicam memory etc
but would happily go elsewhere if cheaper etc) ..

http://tinyurl.com/hr2o3

... so could someone point me to which product would be suitable please
so I know what I'm looking for (MMC, MMC Plus, Dual voltage, RSMMC
<sigh>) ;-(

All the best ..

T i m

I posted a similar question a few days ago but had no positive
response. I found the range of memory types a bit confusing and wasn't
sure which were suitable. Is the dual voltage, with more connections,
suitable for example? I want a 1GB. 7dayshop seems to have the best
prices - pity about the £4 post/packing.

Re: Best MMC card / spec / size for 6230 please?

I use a 1gb Kingston MMCplus in my 6230 - works great you can get them for
about £15 from Ebuyer or Dabs.
The 6230 can handle bigger sizes - 2gb or 4gb check out www.mobymemory.com
they guarantee that cards purchased from them will work - and they sell a
great USB pendrive that takes the MMC cards and doubles as a data stick. You
def need a card reader of some kind as filling any of these cards via
bluetooth or the Nokia data cable would be torturous!
I think 1gb is the perfect size though because the most files you can have
in a playlist on the 6230 is about 197 - though you could have several
playlists created with Nokia PC Suite if you want. I can't be bothered with
playlists though so on my 1gb I have about 180 full MP3s (about 12 hours)
plus a couple of half-hour videos. Use the random function in music player
and you get an Ipod shuffle for £15 odd!
The 6230 and 6230i use standard MMC cards - but MMCplus and RSMMC cards are
backwards compatible (adaptor needed for RSMMC), so will also work fine.
Although you will not get any advantage using MMCplus on the Nokia, it makes
a big difference using a card reader that supports MMC plus. The 6230 will
not use the extra contacts on MMCplus or RS-MMC. The only reason to buy
RS-MMC is if you think you might upgrade to a phone later that only takes
these smaller cards.
Prices are so low now why not go for 2 x 1gb cards so you can swap them
around and change the tracks quicker!

Re: Best MMC card / spec / size for 6230 please?

Been reading this thread with interest, but don't seem to have answered my
question "why is it so difficult?", and "who has failed to meet the standard?".

I bought a 512MB card from CPC, the picture in the catalogue shows a single
line of gold connectors, but the card has two rows for some reason.

It works perfectly well in my palm pilot and with the PC providing I am careful
about the way I insert it into the USB adaptor, to avoid shorting these extra
superfluous pins. It works under both windows and linux.

It works in my 6230, providing I put between 250 and 350MB on it, any more or
less and it is not even seen by the phone. It is not seen if the files are in
directorys.

It doesn't work at all in my wifes newer 6230i, and I have to "move" a file
on the PC.

As it works with a PC or PDA, it would suggest that nokia have failed to meet
the MMC spec.

Finally, "why did they not allow the extra depth to take a cheaper, more
available SD card?", I already had loads of those.

Thanks for any answers, it is intriguing me as to why phone manufacturers
have implemented this simple technology so badly.

Thanks, Graham, for all your useful comments. Having not had to use
it, all this MMC technology had passed me by.
If I am going to buy a card I do want it to be future proof as much as
possible. I guessed that buying a standard MMC card wouldn't be, so
that is why I wanted to know about the other types and if they would
work in the 6230i.
The use of a reader/writer is a good suggestion. I like to listen to
podcasts - e.g. the stuff mag podcast. Using bluetooth is does take a
while to load up. I had thought of getting a data lead. I think that
the only disadvantage of readers is that you have to keep taking the
memory out of the phone with the attendant wear and tear on the
connections etc.
Three questions:-
Load-up speed wise: I gather, from what you have written, that the
MMC+ card is best - Yes?
Which is more future proof the RS-MMC or the MMC+ - or are they much
of the same?
Is the MMC+ the same as the card known as MMC mobile?

As all the different MMC cards are backwards compatible with the original, I
guess the most future-proof would be dual-voltage reduced-size MMC (DV
RS-MMC or MMC mobile). Whatever you buy it should work!
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MultiMediaCard for a good description of
the multi-media card.

Thanks for your advice, Graham, I've ordered as suggested - a reader
too!
