I have just abandoned Orange as I am now working in Cumbria and have
had too many problems with coverage. For the time being I have signed
up with Tesco (O2) but am unable to get proper internet access. I am
looking for a contract which provides reasonably economic gprs full
internet access but without commitment to a large monthly bundle.
Coverage in Cuumbria seems to be best with O2 and Vodafone.

As I now have no contract and an unlocked phone I would also be
interested in any deals which might get me a decent free phone as a
spare (or possibly a datacard for my laptop).

If you have O2 coverage, you could try their pay and go. If you top up
by £10 a month you get bonus minutes in addition to your credit and
also 1Mb, not to sure if that is unrestricted GPRS or whether just the
O2 Active and Imode sites, additional is £3 Mb and you can also buy
    the Bolt Ons.

Not aware of any Voda deals on PAYG and understand it is a flat rate of
    £7.50 Mb.

If you have Tmobile coverage you could also try Easymobile. £3Mb, no
smtp for email so you need to get your own smtp server that will allow
    access.

Sorry not familiar with the contract deals but no doubt other posters
    may be able to help.

I don't think any networks allow access to internet APNs on PAYG. It's
a shame Tesco don't allow this as otherwise their all calls rate at 10p
    per minute would be excellent.

Virgin Mobile does, but at £5/MB. Since it's using the T-Mobile network, i
would naively think that T-Mobile does also (although i know, this is not
related). In the thread "PAYG 3G data tariffs" i started a few days ago,
hairydog and Dave C pointed out the new T-Mobile PAYG tarifs starting from
    August:
    <http://www.t-mobilepressoffice.co.uk/press/uk/2006/20.06.06-wnw-pay-as-you-go.htm>

£7.5/MB but with a max of £1 per day after which you can keep browsing for
free. If you've got T-Mobile coverage and use the mobile Internet quite a
lot, it's probably going to be your best bet.

I don't think that O2 or vodafone are offering any decent rates for data.
The only two data friendly operators seem to be Orange and T-Mobile.

There is a T-mobile SIM only contract deal which is £7.50 a month to
which WnW can be added for a further £7.50 a month. It can be cancelled
with 30 days notice at any time.

So for heavier usage that may work out best.

It also includes 50 cross network minutes.

The T&Cs for WnW prohibit various things including laptop modem use
(presumably PAYG will too). You can add WnW Pro bundle instead for £10 a
month which doesn't have that restriction.

If the OP has T-Mobile coverage, then a web 'n' walk professional contract
might be worth considering. 20 quid a month for unlimited data (2GB cap) and
a free GPRS/3G/Wi-Fi data card. This is an 18 month contract, if he went for
a 12 month one the data card would cost 60 quid.

    http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher...nPricePlan=pmt

Alternatively, if he went for a SIM only contract, by adding the £7.50
consumer add on to T-Mobile's 50 mins for £7.50 monthly SIM only contract,
He would get unlimited data (with the inevitable 2Gb cap) and 50 minutes
talk time for 15 quid a month with no minimum term. Although it should be
noted that the T&Cs specifically prohibit using you phone as a modem for a
    PC on this tariff.

    http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher...al_sim_only_pm

Some people have also reported getting T-Mobile's "secret" web 'n' walk pro
bundle added to consumer tariffs, including the SIM only one, this costs £10
per month and has no prohibition on using the phone as a modem. It is not
shown anywhere on the T-Mobile web site and can only be obtained by phoning
customer services and asking the CS rep to add the "web 'n' walk pro bundle"
    to your tariff.

This seems a very good deal if I can get it. £17.50 per month for 50
mins of calls and unlimited data if I understand correctly. I've
nothing to lose by signing up for the sim and will then see if I can
get the web'n'walk pro bundle added. My ony worry is coverage in the
Lake District (which is where I started from!) I'm a bit suspicious
there may be a lose connection in my P910i which may be contribbuting
    to the problem.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions -much appreciated.

Hence my question about T Mobile coverage, I use an Easymobile SIM on
my XDA PDA/phone as it it offers full internet access, APN is data.uk,
no user name or password, simple. They do not have SMTP though so you
will have to find your own SMTP. The data rate is £3 Mb. Rather than
get into a Tmobile contract or spend £5 on a T mobile SIM then another
£5 - £10 top up only to find that the T mobile coverage is not
adequate, get an Easymobile SIM for £2 and get £25 of credit chucked
in (offer ends 19 July). https://www.easymobile.com/ That way you can
check the coverage for minimal layout, if it works then you have 8Mb
for £2 and can then decide whether to continue with Easymobile or go
    with Tmobile

Thanks for this. I have signed up for a T-mobile sim but only on a
monthly contract as yet. I may take up your suggestion of Easymobile
which will avoid the need for a data subscription. Any suggestions for
how to get around the SMTP problem? Does the SMTP restriction apply to
    T_mobile as well?

    Re: Best Data Package/Network

Regarding Easymobile and SMTP, it's not so much a restriction, it's
just that they do not have an SMTP server.

T Mobile SMTP server is smtp.t-email.co.uk see
    http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html

You could try the Easymobile SIM to see if the T Mob SMTP server will
allow acceess, probably not, otherwise I think www.hotpop.com has an
SMTP server that you can use.

Just to report back. I now have my T-mobile sim on the sim only deal
plus pro web 'n' walk. Everything seeems to work fine. No problems
sending or receiving email (connecting to exchange server via imap and
smtp). All I need to find out now is what the coverage is like in the
Lakes. (I'm back in sunny Newcastle for the weekend.) Thanks again to
    everyone for the help.

As a bonus I have an easymobile payg sim with £25 credit - all for
£2. Thanks again to all for the helpful advice.
