There are web-to-sms gateways that allow you to send texts for a few p (or
sometimes even free but then they usually add some advertisement to your
texts or are very unreliable). They usually offer a Java application that
you can install on your phone.
One of the best is <http://vgsmail.com/>. It is/was a non-profit web-to-sms
gateawy, at 4.1p a text to anywhere in the world that is/was very reliable.
It owner had decided to shut it down a few month ago but it has then been
bought by QX Telecom recently so it's gonna live on. We don't know yet how
QX Telecom is going to manage vgsmail but for now, it's still working fine.

Re: Cheap way to send international texts?
Hi,
I work for Vodafone and can offer you some informal advice.
I just thought it might be worth pointing out with regards to 07744
numbers, that Vodafone don't support this facility despite this claim
being advertised on several third party 07744 websites.
Vodafone's billing department are currently investigating claims on
these third party websites to avoid future confusion.
I hope this helps.
