Has it occurred to you how many items are sold on eBay each day? If
only one person in ten was to spam the newsgroups each time they put a
crappy old item for sale, it would be the end of Usenet as an
information source.

Nasty, slow and unreliable. Use Special Delivery and don't offer
anything else.

That's rubbish. RD signed for is what crooked posties target. Ordinary
post is actually more secure than RD, not less. However, it does not
get written confirmation that the package was delivered somewhere.
Whatever form of delivery you choose to use, you are responsible for
the safe arrival of the item. eBay will hold you responsible even if
you try to wriggle out.
You can and will be held responsible for non-delivery. As it happens,
ordinary post gets £30 of compensation if the package doesn't arrive,
which is probably enough in this case, but you have to claim, not the
recipient.
