Your subject neglects to point out they gained 166,000 PAYG customers in
the same period, so net loss was a paltry 1,000 customers. The remaining
1,000 were likely of very low ARPU and were best rid of.

Looks like The Animal Plans were a complete success then.

How long would you like the subject line to be?
In any event speculation is that a great percentage of the 166,000
PAYG customers were those who closed their accounts and transferred
the number to a PAYG SIM card. Some may later port on to other
networks and some may just leave the SIM's in a drawer until they are
cut off.
As to your final statement, only time will tell.

A new animal will be introduced soon. RAT - those customers wise enough
to jump ship.

How they expect to attract contract customers when the tariff names give
absolutely no clue whatever to what they offer is anyone's guess.
Perhaps they had to find a job for that obnoxious 12 year old ex-phone
trainer and decided to put him in charge of their tariff redesign...

Couldn't agree more! There so much choice now with phones & tariffs they
have made a big mistake with the "animal" stuff, it puts another layer of
complexity there.
To quote theregister.co.uk
"..
It's just left for new Orange customers and those migrating to the new rates
to decide: are they a dolphin, a panther, a canary, or a raccoon?
The 'Dolphin' package - "For people who like to text a lot". Curious pick,
given a dolphin's digits are captive within its flippers and it lacks the
requisite opposable thumbs - thnx a lt ntrl slctn. Trade in some minutes for
some texts.
The 'Panther' package - "For people who like all the extras". Not in a
massage parlour way, one presumes. Comes with inclusive 3G minutes. They
would give the most expensive package the coolest name.
The 'Canary' package - "For people who love to chat". The superior vocal
skills of the parrot family must've been too piratey for Orange's lawyers.
And the tarrifs aren't even that cheep. Sorry. Comes with Orange to Orange
off-peak minutes.
The 'Raccoon' package - "For people who want no nonsense basics". People who
can only afford to live out of bins? And as for no nonsense... ® "
What happened to the simplicity of Talk 60 i.e. Talk for 60 minutes! Or
Virgin 30 - 400 600 (£30 400 minutes 600 texts) Simple. No animals required!
Marketing gone mad!
I personally like the idea of t-mobiles flext tarrifs...

well I know of 8 ppl who took out PAYG to buy the phones on offer then
unlocked them and binned the Orange SIM, so all figures can be played
with.

Combination of daft tariffs, usless CS and price gouging.
Anyone know how many they lost Q1 2006 out of interest?
Sam.

the online deals with the free broadband don't seem too bad. I've been
wondering whether to sign up for a while but the tariffs can't be the only
reason people are leaving?

Agreed, if you're getting a free payg sim card with your old number, you may
aswell! Means you can get your PAC without worrying about porting times and
contract-costs.

Absolutely. You've got a minimum of six months to decide which network
to go to.
