My 12 month contract with Orange is soon up. I received a call from them
today offering me a 10% discount to renew my contract together with a free
mobile phone.
I said I was happy with the handset I had and therefore didn't need a new
one.
"I can only apply the 10% discount to your account if you have a free
handset" I was told!!! So in order to give a a 10% they have to send me a
free handset (Nokia 6280) which I don't want and would sit unused in a draw.
Why they couldn't just offer me the discount without a free handset is
beyond me, and doesn't seem to make much sense.

Sell it on ebay and make some money, you will get around £150 for a
6280.

If you're happy with the contract and your present pohone then take
the upgrade offer, pay 10% less per month and sell the new phone on
eBay. I suggest that you don't open the box (i.e. leave the security
seal intact) and, taking the usual precautions when selling a mobile
on ebay, get it listed ASAP.

I don't seem to remember having a new sim on any of my wife's upgrades
(with Orange & T-Mobile). All that happens is we sign a new contract,
andhave a new phone every year. This phone is then sold - it helps
bring down the monthly cost.

Renewal for 12 or 18 months? - be careful.

If they send you a new handset they can lock you into another 12 / 18 month
contract.

They started by offering 18 months. I have a week to look around for another
deal. Tempted to go for a deal with another network and get a "free gift"
for doing so, seems to be a few tempting PSP, Xbox 360, IPOD, Sat Nav etc.
It would mean changing network I guess because you cannot start a new
contract with the same company I assume??

That wont' be possible as the box will have to be opened to get the new
SIM card out.
There's also a small chance that the USIM supplied with the 6280 may not
function correctly in the OPs current handset.

Discount *and* a phone is for 18 months.

I went with an upgrade and discount (on ED50!), and while it was for 18
months, I didn't have to take a free phone, instead I paid for a Motorola
L7 SLVR. (And, before anyone laughs, I like the more sensible Motorolas...
the PEBL, on the other hand, isn't a sensible phone

I assumed I would just get a new phone and if I wanted to use it would have
to take the sim out of my current phone (Orange M500) and put it in the new
one. I guess having two sims (with the same mobile phone number) would allow
you to use the other phone as a spare, or let the kids use (for emergency
purposes only!)?

From what the Orange person said I could continue using my current handset,
although they didn't say if I would have to swap the sim cards or not.

No.
Once the new SIM gets activated, the old SIM gets "disabled" for want
of a better word.
After you've got the new SIM registered (not sure if you'd need to do
it in the new handset), you can use the sim in whichever of your
phones you want.

You would need to swap SIMs.

The new SIM must be registered and used by you. You don't need to put it
in the new phone but you will need to register it and use it.

You will.

Thanks. Considering I don't want a new handset it seems a lot of waste and
hassle, not to mention getting tied into another contract for 12/18 months.
Until I want a new handset it may be better to not renew and carry on as I
am now and retain the option of moving contract or renewing at a later
date - I assume that will be an option or will they require me to renew at
the end of my current 12 minth contract?

You don't have to renew. It's entirely your choice.
