Three's MSN Messenger on other networks?

I see that Three appears to be offering MSN Messenger on a number of
their phones - is there anywhere this can be downloaded to put onto
phones for use on other networks?

Anybody got it and know how it works - is it just a downloaded client
that works the same as the PC version? Or does it use some Three
specific server/connection?

Re: Three's MSN Messenger on other networks?

Easy.....

You can use one simple program to access all the popular Instant Messenger
services (and be logged into them all at the same time).

The Software you need is Agile Mobile Messenger available for a range of
phones at http://www.agilemobile.com/

Once installed its easy to set up and you pay your network for the data
used. There is a useful data counter to keep track of the costs but you
should find that your costs should be similar to sending and receiving SMS.
Check what bundles are available from you network as casual data use can be
vastly more expensive than buying an add-on.

IM is not new on mobiles and MSN has been available via 3rd party software
for many years, 3's are first with a marketing tie-up with Microsoft though.
I believe they are charging £2 a MB to use MSN Messenger, Orange charge £4
for a 4MB bundle, so £1 a MB, others vary.

Hope the above helps.

It's a bit weird. Although Three have lowered their walls, that only seems
to apply to the web; you can't start using your own email accounts or
general Internet apps, including IM.

I think Three's application uses a special server like you suspect (and is
how they can bill separately for it) and so currently remains the only way
to use MSN on their network, unless you find something that runs over
HTTP/WAP. If you have an OMA IMPS client ("my friends" on SE phones) then
you could try finding a HTTP server for that. These integrated clients work
much better than add ons anyway.

Oh, and to answer your question, no, I don't think you can use the software
supplied by Three on other networks. But since there are other solutions for
those anyway, why would you want to?

In my experience from using agile messenger the data that instant messaging
uses is small. Outside of your allowance texts are normally charged at 10p
per text. I'd imagine IM would be cheaper than texting.
