I have just bought one of the above and wonder if any other members of
this ng has had any experience of using them. The device, consisting
of a CD of software and a special Bluetooth dongle, is supposed to
download the phonebook and other data on my Nokia 6230i to my computer
    hard drive.

I set it up and it starts the download procedure but then suddenly
stops downloading before the complete phonebook has been transferred.
I then try again and again but the same thing happens. A notice comes
up on the PC saying that the downloading has failed.

I wonder if anyone has any ideas how to fix the problem as the system
seems very good if only it would complete the download.

    Use Nokia's own software.

I suspect that your dongle is not special in any way, it may be branded
    as such but it isn't.

I can assure you that it is very special and has its own key code. The
software will not work with an ordinary bluetooth dongle as I have
    tried that.

The software can be downloaded from the Internet free of charge
www.mobileaction.com but it will only work with a MA dongle for which
    one has to pay.

I looked at the site but still don't understand... what's it for? It seems
to do the same as the Nokia software which is free anyway.

Well I stand corrected, but also dumbfounded.

If it's simply a matter of knowing the bluetooth passkey then this
surely will be in the documentation somewhere? In fact you would have to
know the passkey to be able to enter it into your phone.

No, one enters the passkey into the software during the installation
process. That allows it to talk to the dongle.

The free Nokia software is fine as far as Nokia goes but the MA allows
one to transfer phone books from one handset to another. If I were to
buy a Motorola phone f'rinstance, I could transfer the phonebook from
my Nokia to my Motorola with no losses or truncations.

Most shops say they will transfer your phonebook from your old phone
to your new one but they use a SIM card as a "wheelbarrow" and if you
look at data transferred by SIM, it is truncated because the SIM can
only cope with words of limited length.

BTW, I have over 200 entries in my phonebook collected over many
    years!

Yes, that's for the software, not the BT driver which is available
    separately.

Personally I'd still ditch the MA device and buy a generic BT dongle with a
Widcomm stack. There is software available for most handsets that allows
you to import and export phone book etc. You may have to use an intermediate
    format such as csv though.

Sync the nokia with outlook (if you can) and then your chosen new phone
also with outlook. That's how I do it, I have around 250, most with 2
numbers and about half with an email address and around 30 with postal
    addresses.
